You like Sonic Eraser?

Of course you don't. It is objectively bad. Granted, that's a class of Sonic game that has long since outnumbered every other category. But at the time it was still a novelty, and to be fair it has a good excuse to suck.

You should care about it because... 🧵

Bitty interview with Naoto Ōshima (still incognito as Big Island) and Sega CS1 GM Makoto Oshitani from the Dec. 1991 issue of MD Fan.

Mostly fluff, but still a fascinating peek at the exact juncture at which the first Sonic sequel split into two separate projects.

Let's dig into the juicy bits 🧵

Sonic the Hedgehog plays like Mario but looks better and is more realistic.
Via the rare (newly VGHF-archived) Electronic Gaming Retail News from 1992, here's Sega boasting that... they don't need to bribe journalists to have better product coverage than Nintendo?

16 hours on the road and an exorbitant amount of gas, but worth it to see this living fossil

The cabinet's pretty scuffed up, and the CRT is faded and blinky, but this old boy is still serving up mediocre popcorn for the same 100 yen it’s charged for over 30 years – and in 2025, that’s a steal. 1/2

While only one of Yoko K's illustrations has been identified, I assume that she also drew some of the illustrations for Teddy Boy Blues, Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle (whose background was painted by another in-house artist).

In an interview/meeting on 20 Nov 1995, Naoto Ohshima requested that AM2 include Espio & Fang in Sonic the Fighters. No reason is given for why he chose them, but their character designers were both working as world artists on NiGHTS into Dreams..., which was in development at the time.
It's not clear what his role in that game actually was. In Sonic 1 he was the lead artist and character designer, but those roles are filled in Sonic CD by Hiroyuki Kawaguchi and Kazuyuki Hoshino respectively.

After CD, he continued to advise on Sonic-related projects but remained mostly hands-off.
