New study fr the libertarian Cato Institute analyzed 30 years of budget data (1994-2023) and found immigrants generated $14.5T in savings, cut deficits by 1/3, and prevented a potential debt crisis. Every education level contributed positively.

Microbiologist Alice Catherine Evans was born #OTD in 1881.

She proved that the bacterium 𝘉𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘴 caused brucellosis (aka undulant fever) in humans & cattle. This led to the pasteurization of milk in the US in 1930. First woman president, Society of American Bacteriologists.

I think one of the biggest gaps in American civic culture among those opposed to authoritarianism is realistic threat-assessment literacy: the ability to understand how norms erode, how coercion works, and what factors, including resilient institutions, truly deter political coercion and violence.

Atmospheric chemist Susan Solomon was born #OTD in 1956.

Solomon, working with colleagues at NOAA, proposed/confirmed the cause of the Antarctic ozone hole, chlorofluorocarbons. She led the Nat'l Ozone Expedition to Antarctica to collect evidence & was the only woman on the team. #WomenInSTEM (1/2)

#OTD in 1939, French physicist Marguerite Perey discovered the element francium.

She was the the first woman to be elected to the French Académie des Sciences (1962). In 1911, the Académie turned down Perey's mentor, Marie Curie, for membership. #WomenInSTEM
