Statement of intention: I’m returning to writing about and advocating for accessibility and disability rights, after years of doing other things — including 4.5 years as department chair followed by 1 calendar year of … let’s call it decompressing.

As a former NEHer who believes strongly in their mission & the state humanities councils, I’m gravely concerned about their future. I wrote this in March 2017 when their budget was last targeted for elimination. Please share & talk about their value to your community!

Screen readers are an assistive technology that interprets the information on a screen and translates it to either synthesized speech or Braille output. This helps blind people, people with low vision, and people with cognitive or learning disabilities.

X is one of my bucket list bands, and I got to see them this past Sunday at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse.

They were *amazing.* John Doe may be 71, but his bass playing and stage presence are still badass. The whole band sounded great.

The the takeaways are clear:

1. The state must invest in higher education as a public good.

2. Students should never be asked to accumulate debt to support athletics.

3. Pay the players producing athletic department revenue.
Big weekend for UCONN basketball so it’s probably a good time to note that the school is cutting 15% from all academic units over the next five years to cover a $70M deficit, yet continues to subsidize athletics with over $30M per year from the academic side.

Kevin is spot on with this observation as we in the U.S. enter another election year where higher ed is on the table as one of the red meat culture war topics likely to get significant attention.
If you are a college/university administrator, and you don't have a detailed, specific plan for dealing with online campaigns and targeted harassment, you are failing as a leader. And this means educating your Boards on how all this works, too. Lead, don't crumble. Because they'll come for you, too.

Is anybody using Slack for disciplinary discussions like we used to use listservs? I know this is a really naïve question, and I’m probably asking it a decade too late. I’m thinking particularly of digital humanities people, but I’m happy to connect w anyone who has similar scholarly interest as me.
