Kind of obsessed with fossils. Polymer clay artist. Native plants. Pet rats. Long Covid. 🇨🇦

Probably hasn’t had enough tea today.

They/Them
Every time I post anything on this site I feel the need to say: I’m completely overwhelmed by all the crap going on in the world, and don’t know what to say or do or how to respond to it, so…here, have some cool bugs/plants/pets/ whatever.

Bicolour Striped Sweat Bee (Agapostemon virescens) on Nodding Wild Onion (Allium cernuum).
Every time I step out the door there is something interesting to see in the garden.

Our sweet little Raven passed away last weekend. We miss her so much. She was one of our standard-sized ratties and loved to come out for snacks and snuggles.

I love that plants were included here! 🌿
I wonder what this would look like for Canadian provinces. I think catalpa trees are what I notice most because they’re my favourite.

Alright I have a question for *all of you*, esp for those of you who are not into environment stuff.

When you think about planting native plants in the area you control, what *prevents* you from taking that action? These could be emotional, financial, practical, anything.

RTs appreciated here.

Look at this bitty lil’ bee (Genus Ceratina?) covered in pollen from Coreopsis lanceolata! 😍

Never discount the power of visibility.
We have a “Protect Trans Rights” sign up in our yard and a large pride flag on our balcony.
Today someone knocked on our door just to thank us. She saw the sign and had a little cry in her car and then came over to say thank you.
That matters a LOT.

We had to say goodbye to Harley last weekend. She was our faux hawk-sporting drama queen who took exercise very seriously and lived to be just over 3.5 years.

I've seen folks talk about how "in four years" they'll be able to get back to their planned projects and I really don't think that's going to work out. People & projects losing funding now will not be able to hit pause and come back once funding is restored. Hard-won progress & capacity will be lost
I worry that not enough of a big deal is being made about how long-term the devastation of these budget cuts to our scientific and health agencies will be, beyond the absolute ruin they will cause in the acute period.

Metallic Green Sweat Bee and unidentified bee on golden alexanders.
Guys I had no idea there were so many types of native bees and now that I want to identify them they will not stay still for photos. 🤣

Baby bunny disappeared into the foliage just after this photo. I’m loving that our native garden is finally dense enough in places to provide hiding places for wildlife. Robin fledglings are also hiding in there.

Geranium maculatum (wild geranium) and Zizia aurea (Golden Alexanders) are throwing a PARTY in the garden right now.
Native plants ftw.
