Also crucially we get paid when libraries buy our books! There is nothing to be sorry about ever in borrowing a fave author’s books from a library! It is one of the few “everybody wins” situations in life!
Someone said to me, "I'm sorry but I got your book from a library." Nobody should ever apologise for that. You read my book! That's brilliant! I grew up hanging out in libraries and the idea of a world without them fills me with dread. Without libraries, authors, like readers, will only suffer.

Also, the comic strip fiction category has found “27.8% growth in 2025, and it now occupies a fifth of the Top 50, as well as accounting for nearly a quarter of its sales.”??? Flipping YES PLEASE 🤯

It’s maybe not the point, but it warms my heart to see the word ‘comics’ being used here rather than ‘graphic novels’

We received an outpouring of messages, both publicly and privately, about the loss of 404 Ink, and questions on what could be done, so we would really *love* if any literary orgs or publishers would like to talk more about donating further bursaries. Email or DM us!

Day job discourse!

Over 60 published works and most days I do media and comms for Scottish Water, 9-5. I recently dropped 2 days per month for comics which has been amazing.

I’d love to do comics full time, but for now I’m enjoying the ride and the safety net Scottish Water provides.

Very, very few comic book creators can survive on just the money they make from comics. It is an inherently unstable job and it is only getting worse as time goes on. Don't ever be embarrassed or ashamed of needing another job so that you can keep making comics.
