So, my support for trans rights means I can’t get the grant to do the water resource engineering research even when I’m the best one for the job. And I thought they were all about ‘merit’ and ‘efficiency’… 🧐
“Discretionary awards shall not be used to fund, promote, encourage, subsidize, or facilitate … denial by the grant recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic”

TL;dr grants to be denied to entities who acknowledge the existence of trans people

Among the many things that bum me out about anti-vaccine nonsense is that every rich person knows vaccines work. Bezos could dedicate a great metropolitan newspaper to saying so. The LA Times is owned by a biotech billionaire. But saying so could affect their personal bottom line now, so.

SCOOP from me: Trump's AI action plan released last week makes a specific set of recommendations around loosening Clean Water Act permits for data centers — recommendations mirrored in letters sent to the administration by Big Tech lobbyists earlier this year:
Big Tech Asked for Looser Clean Water Act Permitting. Trump Wants to Give It to Them
New AI regulations suggested by the White House mirror changes to environmental permitting suggested by Meta and a lobbying group representing firms like Google and Amazon Web Services.

Looking for a speaker? I am contractually obligated to give a few “high level” talks each fiscal year and given the chaos, I’ve got a space open for 2025-26. Send me a note if you want to talk science/research/climate communication, water/wildfire/disaster, community engagement. I hear I do okay!

Rural healthcare is already hanging on by a thread. With Medicaid cuts here in rural Arizona - which will affect several members of my nuclear family and half the population here, at least - I do not see how healthcare facilities will manage. The knock-on impacts are hard to even fathom.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court ruled public schools must allow opt-outs from any lesson parents believe will interfere with their child's religious development, including LGBTQ-themed materials.

This will make it difficult for public schools to teach lessons that may trigger religious objections.

A refreshing breakthrough on #ColoradoRiver negotiations: let's manage the river based on the actual water it has, not what was legally promised 100 years ago. (The fact that this idea is simultaneously "innovative" and...obvious...says a lot about western water policy) www.upr.org/mountain-wes...
New Colorado River proposal breaks over year long negotiation deadlock
Colorado River states appear to be coalescing around the early makings of a new plan to share water in a way that accounts for climate change.

Effectively a full repeal of the largest climate bill in history. There’s no strategy for America’s future. We all get sicker and pay more in energy bills and suffer climate disasters, while some rich folks pay less in taxes. That’s it. Disgraceful.
The House Republican's budget bill is starting to drop. It extends trillions in tax cuts for the wealthy while effectively crippling US manufacturing & energy industries and raising energy costs. It's effectively full repeal of the IRA. Here's tax portion waysandmeans.house.gov/wp-content/u... 🔌💡
