It's called having friends and older siblings. Or favorite streamers.

I see a lot of this from armchair designer players with a smug air of like, 'silly developer, didn't you realize this design space was already solved?' and it mystifies me because if that's your attitude why are you even bothering to play new games.

Negative reviews of my work with good points are like.. fair! But sometimes the reviews are very genre-normative and it's hard not to feel I'm reading an opinion from the Immune Response for Keeping Games Mid. In conclusion, eat an apple before writing reviews everyone

I've never said this, but Cave Story and Pixel / 天谷 大輔 are the reason I got back into making games, after being talked out of it as a young adult.

Knowing that a hobbiest taught themselves how to make a game engine, charming art, music, and to tell a beautiful little story, was very inspirational.

I've said it before but one of the most revelatory things about reading Marxist theory is seeing just how much genAI automation is just the same old business-as-usual capitalism. Here's Ernest Mandel's Late Capitalism in 1972.

amazing how the entire machine can pivot within 24 hours. no need to slowly upsell the argument; just issue new marching orders

The entire apparatus of American government isn't doing anything to protect its citizens from cops.

It's only a matter of time before an oppressed, silenced, abandoned public turns to violence again. And if the past was any indication, it'd be widely supported. What other avenue for change is left?

It was wild to hear teachers and professors say how lucky we are to live in this peaceful democracy. How capitalism creates the best lives and most efficient industries. All that.

And life since then has been a slow but steady revelation of the utter ignorance and cope that this worldview requires.

i love robinson's description of this, from memory like "i had no idea how to play this spy shit, but alexander siddig was the most beautiful man i'd ever met in my life, so i decided to just play it like i had a crush on him, and bless his heart, he picked it up immediately and rolled with it"
For the unacquainted, this is literally Garak's first on-screen appearance. It's about two minutes long, but watch until the end. Trust me.

Working on some smooth low-poly 3D tiles, for subterranean environments.

Having trouble with Blender, getting the sharp seams/normals to be shared across different tile shapes. Tricky to get the edges pointing the same kind of forward, but keep the vertical smoothing. Like the general look though!

I think of myself as someone with a good sense of smell...

...but in the Neanderthal "I can guess when a friend is sad, angry, or flustered by their smell" and "I can smell the residue of blood plasma on your day-old scrape from across the room" kind of way.

Happy New Year!

2025 has been year of big but hopeful changes in my life. Managed most of my big "Goals For The Next 5 Years" since 2020, too.

Looking forward to spending 2026 moving, building community, and finding a way to do more of what I love and am good at.

Stonesense, the isometric front-end for Dwarf Fortress I made with friends... which was the inspiration for Minecraft's pixels-and-cubes look.

When Notch was considering pivoting graphical styles to something higher-res, our chats might be what convinced him to keep the pixels-and-cubes look, too.
