I’ve shared the most recent NWS Raleigh models with every one of my classes for the past two days. Significant chance of dangerous ice. Almost no chance of snow.
NWS in Raleigh is calling for 1 inch of sleet and 0.16 inches of freezing rain in Chapel Hill on Sunday. No snow.

Meanwhile iOS weather is still calling for 10-12 inches of snow Sunday. #ncwx

It would be very nice if Duke Energy would hurry along and get my solar system with backup battery online by Saturday. County inspection is tomorrow. It’s operational already but not yet operating.

May the leaders of the new world order shoot Trump in the knees, metaphorically I guess

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

While we wait for the trees to start their spring burst of growth, it is worth looking at winter details. The intricacy of the bark of this Kentucky coffeetree, Gymnocladus dioicus, is worthy of study, as is the bark of most trees. The coffeetree twig, stout with tiny buds, is very unusual.

Why are our elected officials not all standing in front of the White House screaming, refusing to leave. They all have god damned residences there.
Trump just needs reform I guess. Just like ICE.

What a nightmare.

We experienced a truly incredible moment at the aquarium when this octopus decided to be a total jerk to its tankmate.

My toddler’s Grateful Dead Dancing Bears hat is from the mid-90s from Stowe Mountain. It used to be big kid sized but it shrank and I am from big noggin’d people. We also save everything.

I can’t handle the abject terror in Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy collections right now. I just can’t. At least not when I read it on my kindle and can’t skim to see if it’s going to include a parent killing their child or some other horror.

Off to Libby I go for a different book

and be murdered if she didn’t?

Is that the the rest of this question is meant to say? Because there’s not a single mention that an ICE officer would be obligated to not shoot her in the face. Not in the whole article.

This is a watershed moment for Texas - for the first time ever, solar supplied more electricity than coal in 2025.

I will say it again: At this rate, TX will likely decarbonize its electricity sector faster than CA.

TX clean electricity is growing at 13%,m more than twice that of CA's at 6%.
Texas solar power surpassed coal in 2025 for the first year ever. Here's why.
In 2025 — for the first year ever — solar arrays provided more electricity to Texas’ main power grid than coal-fired power plants.

Asgard archaea may have facilitated the evolutionary development of the mitochondria via endosymbiosis of α-proteobacteria at some point between the first eukaryotic common ancestor (FECA) and the last eukaryotic common ancestor (LECA)! 🧪

Outside of the horrors, I’ve been thinking a lot about @tressiemcphd.bsky.social’s discourse about home reno contractors today since I was home with a sick kid. You should check it out.

I was talking about my new solar panels on Saturday and my neighbor said I must not be planning to move soon.

This bobtail squid burrowing into the sand is already adorable, but please watch till the very end!

It sticks out its little arms and earnestly sprinkles sand over itself 🦑𓂃◌𓈒𓐍

The Genesee River which flows through Letchworth State Park and ends right near my brother’s house in Rochester, NY. Not my photo but not much beats the Finger Lakes region in peak color.

I'm making a series of infographics at the moment for some school groups, and, honestly, I'm really enjoying it!!!
They're learning about paleontology, and I was asked if I could provide some images of extinct plants and animals! Here are the first few: #paleoart #scicomm #education #paleontology
