It's during inking when things go a bit crazy. This is just a cutout of the full motif. Back in the day, when inking on paper with a pen, I would add to lines, remove from lines by scratching with a scalpel, until each line looks the way I want. I basically still do the same.

And in regard of my reskeet with last year's holiday motif: Yes, while being digital, it still is all hand-drawn, from sketch to line inking to coloring. With a stylus on a large screen you directly draw upon (for those not in the business). But the technique is the same.
