I'm not well informed on Venezuela tbh but can't get my head around how much of a total fucking rube anyone vaguely familiar with the history of US intervention in Latin America would need to be to think that yes, everything they've heard about Maduro is surely unambiguously accurate.

People are going to try and lure you into debates about whether Maduro was a good guy or not and the thing is, it doesn’t matter for the purposes of discussing whether violent kidnappings and extrajudicial murders by the US government are ok. No, they aren’t! End of convo.

Pleased to close off the year with my review of Leyla Bouzid's Une histoire d'amour et de désir (2021) appearing in Imaginaries: a film that has the distinction of being among the few I know to largely be structured around a semester of comp lit seminars! Link below:

It's objectively, verifiably incorrect to say that 'any other minority' would get an apology if they complained about the language used about them, and that's without even getting into how this ghoul casually equates Zionism with Judaism (something she'd rightly call others antisemitic for doing).
I'll say it again: if any other ethnic or religious minority said "please don't use this particular term or chant, you might not have bad intentions but it is deeply racist and threatening to us", the reaction would be mortified apology.
