I also want to say thank you to the person who introduced me to the French word 'beaucoup' this year. It means a lot.

Pleased to close off the year with my review of Leyla Bouzid's Une histoire d'amour et de désir (2021) appearing in Imaginaries: a film that has the distinction of being among the few I know to largely be structured around a semester of comp lit seminars! Link below:

It's objectively, verifiably incorrect to say that 'any other minority' would get an apology if they complained about the language used about them, and that's without even getting into how this ghoul casually equates Zionism with Judaism (something she'd rightly call others antisemitic for doing).
I'll say it again: if any other ethnic or religious minority said "please don't use this particular term or chant, you might not have bad intentions but it is deeply racist and threatening to us", the reaction would be mortified apology.

And that's without a mass terror event four days ago

Famously, the way to beat the far right is by giving them exactly what they want 100% of the time.

Tiring to constantly repeat this, but 'appealing to the concerns of far-right voters' has been shown time and again to only mainstream the far right.

Back in the golden age of academic Twitter I used to say I'd never be a vanilla online academic who posted 'excited to be at a conference' every 6 months. I would live & die as a shitpost goblin. Look at me now: posting that I'm excited to be in London for this year's SFPS conference on Fanon at 100

Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

‘Remigration’ is a term that comes out of the European far right. Its use by the DHS account is a sign of democratic and epistemic collapse

I like a Smint as much as the next man (maybe even more), but it's really upsetting to me that you can get them as the snack in a Tesco meal deal as it implies there are sociopaths out there eating a whole pack of Smints one by one after lunch.

The thing to understand is that there is a particular contingent within Labour who assess their own performance not based on the support they get from the right (which will always be, basically, none) but on how much they repulse the left. So they turn into Reform, without actually getting votes.

This reproduction of far-right policies and discourses, while at the same time claiming to embody 'openness, tolerance and generosity' is Labour's current approach in microcosm: legitimate the far right, make them your main opponent, then posture as the only barrier keeping them out of power.
"Mahmood said a raft of tough immigration controls were designed to unlock “the inherent openness, tolerance and generosity” of the British people."

Such nauseating shamelessness.
