Well, when he accepted Verlaine as a brother he wouldn’t have pegged him for a nosy snitch, but there they were. Sure, he had shared such information out of shared worry and there was no Port Mafia member who didn’t know about that graveyard anyway, but still. “I’m gonna have to talk to him.” “Anniversaries are difficult.” Was what Akutagawa chose to continue with, instead of commenting on Chûya’s last words. “Especially if they overlap with another remarkable date as well.” Out all of his friends and coworkers, Akutagawa might as well be one of the select few who could understand it the most; he had joined the mafia on the same day he and Gin’s friends from back at the slums were killed, same as Chûya himself had been celebrating his first anniversary at the organization when the rest of the Flags were killed too. Therefore, if there was someone Chûya would appreciate having there, that was obviously Akutagawa. And that wasn’t the only reason.

No one commented anything about it, but after sharing a brief glance, both Higuchi and Gin left their cups to hold on to one of his hands each. “I was offered to join at the same time my brother did.” When Gin spoke, it was to take their own turn at answering the question. “Nii-san made it clear he was doing it, and I could choose freely because we could live off easily with just one mafia paycheck. But I didn’t want him to carry all the weight alone, like he had mostly done before.” “Money was my reason too.” Higuchi then added, with no trace of shame. “Though, as you can guess since she doesn’t know, I never told my sister.” And, like them, there had to be tons of others in the same situation: money was a big motivator, especially when there hadn’t even been two decades since the last war, and so was seeking personal things like an identity of one’s own or proving something. So, and again, nothing strange at all. Besides… “I don’t regret doing it, by the way. Because I can give her a good life, and because I’ve met you.” Higuchi then added, and now it was Tachihara’s turn to share a glance with Gin, after which both leaned in to kiss both her cheeks.
