Here’s a glorious rendition of Hamish Henderson’s “Freedom Come-All-Ye”, sung by Karine Polwart in the Italian Chapel, Orkney. The chapel was built & decorated by Italian POWs during WW2 using scraps & reclaimed materials, & is still in use today

In the late 90s/early 2000s, Health Education Board for Scotland released a bunch of awareness ads about smoking, drinking and drugs - it’s likely any teen in Scotland from that time remembers all these words.

Youth Volunteers Unite to Protect Hima Anjar Wetland in Large-Scale Cleanup Initiative
On November 1, 2025, the Hima Anjar Wetland came alive with the spirit of volunteerism and environmental stewardship as more than 40 young members of the Homat Al Hima network joined forces for a large-scale cleanup campaign organized by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL). The initiative aimed to restore the beauty of the Hima, safeguard its fragile ecosystem, and raise awareness about the importance of keeping natural habitats free from pollution. Armed with gloves, bags, and an unwavering sense of responsibility, the youth volunteers collected large amounts of waste that had accumulated around the wetland — a vital sanctuary for migratory birds and a key part of Lebanon’s natural heritage.

Learning the noises local non-bird animals make can be really helpful for birding, because chipmunks, squirrels, and frogs can sound like birds.
I’m still adjusting to urban birding apparently— heard a call I couldn’t place, got excited, but it was two Brown Rats fighting over a sandwich.

This is the Roman bathhouse at Bearsden in Glasgow, the only visible remains of the fort on the Antonine Wall that once stood there. Featuring hot and cold rooms as well as plunge pools and a latrine, it also had glazed windows and painted plaster decoration. #RomanFortThursday

Scots have afforded a warm welcome to the newly opened Palestine Museum in Edinburgh, which showcases the joy, vibrancy, and unavoidable horror of Palestinian diaspora art.
