A political cartoon by Megan Herbert divided into 5 panels. The first shows a multicultural, interfaith, intergenerational group of Australians in a moment of mourning outside the Bondi Pavilion. In the second and third panels, we see the tears of those Australians fall to the ground, and then intermingle in a crack in the concrete. A close up of that crack shows a tiny, fragile plant sprouting in that place, with the words "social cohesion" on the leaves. In the final panel, a heavy red carpet is rolled out, and a swarm of police in riot gear charges over it in pursuit of an unseen protester who has fled, dropping a protest sign saying "Not in our name". Beneath the carpet and the stampeding boots, the tiny plant and its white flower have been crushed.

I've attended many rallies in Sydney: anti-nuclear, anti-war, Aboriginal rights, climate action, gay marriage, Voice, pro-Palestine.

At the #HerzogNotWelcome rally tonight, I felt genuinely afraid of our NSW Police. Protesters were peaceful & cooperative. The police were angry & violent. 😔 #nswpol

Arising from Carney's speech, middle powers, including Australia, should issue coordinated statements of concern about rule-of-law breaches and the need to respect alliances. They should defend international institutions like WHO & the UN and accelerate strategic diversification away from the US.
