Epstein survivors just dropped a powerful message for Congress, and it hits like a warning: no more waiting, the truth is coming, ready or not.

Out of 600+ aurora photos from last week, I've culled down to 76 so far. Evenyually I'll get down to a reasonable number & share the batch, but for now occasional individual shots will have to do. How are we feeling about panoramics?

I got a good way through culling & editing finally last night. I still do have a ways to go, but I’m pretty happy with how my shots turned out.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens with the X class flare the sun popped off this morning. Could it be a good Saturday night, too?

The shapes and colors seen in a corona are amazing. As I was watching this one, it literally looked like a butterfly slowly opening & closing its wings before morphing into the next shapes.

Keeping with the Lake Superior theme, but on a much more celebratory note. I was much colder than the surfers out on this -24° morning, but I was having such a good time photographing them that it didn’t matter!

"Those who have never seen Superior get an inadequate idea by hearing it spoken of as a lake; Superior is a sea; It breeds storms and rain and fog like a sea. It is cold, masterful, and dreaded." - Rev. George Grant, 1872

50 years ago today, the Gales of November came early to Lake Superior, taking the Edmund Fitzgerald & the 29 crew aboard.

Kudos to the @seattletimes.com for spelling with diacritical marks used in the Hawaiian language, the ʻokina and the kahakō.

A few years ago, when I asked the NY Times to spell my affiliation as University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, they refused because it went against their style guide.
Why we're using this spelling of Hawaiʻi
You may notice a change in how we spell Hawaiʻi and other Native Hawaiian words at The Seattle Times. Here's why.

Not too many open water days left this year. Soon it'll all be iced over and I'll have to put the kayak away for a little while. Oh well, I'll just have to snowboard, hike & take a few photos along the way.

Sounds like the next few nights could get interesting. I’ll be keeping an eye on the data! The nearly full moon will likely drown things out a bit, but if you have clear skies, it’s worth going out and taking a look!

I've always been a sucker for a high overlook with a big, wide view. It gives me a feeling of endless possibility, of hope. One can look down from above it all and begin to piece the puzzle of life together in all of its interconnectedness & start to see that it's all related.

Election Day. Will the light of dawn overtake the clouds hanging overhead? Will the fog of uncertainty linger?
Elections are a mirror, a reflection of our shared society, our values & our priorities.

The authoritarian takeover of X was a harbinger of the regime’s strategy for America at large.

Bluesky is a perfectly adequate refuge for X exiles. The biggest problem with Bluesky is that so many political and media elites are still on X. That’s not Bluesky’s fault—it reflects poorly on the elite.

Did you know that for the past 13-14 years I've made a annual calendar of my photos? Well it's true. The 2026 iteration is probably my favorite, either because of or in spite of the fact that I kept it exclusively to northern Minnesota images.
The photo below is the back cover image.

I don't have a lot to say today, but here is a pretty scene from north central Minnesota last week.

This morning my 8 year old opened the shade and said, "dad, it's gonna be a colorful one this mornin'."
I continued my first cup of coffee. 15 minutes later the clouds were lit up in pinks and oranges, so I raced out the door only to catch the tail end.

Sometimes a spark of inspiration pops up in unexpected places.

I’ve been pretty frustrated with photography the last year or so, finding much of my work repetitive & kind of lazy.
