I create materials for a living as a contract artist/freelancer. This is some of my work that i did for Scorn. More on my artstation. I'm pretty versatile with styles and topics but disgusting is definitely one of my favs. #substance3d #gamedev #gameart #gamedev #materials #textures #alien #horror

I've been a bit quiet lately, here's a wip of the material I'm spending my spare time on ✨

last night : seeing the northern lights when they were this strong and visible (you could see all the shimmering and dancing with the naked eye, it was just a bit less colour saturated) was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. utterly humbling and astonishing

And then they made an even bigger bet on AI which like the Metaverse nobody can even explain what it would be actually good for for the vast majority of people.

I read "war on optimization" yesterday.

With regards to AI upscalers I'm ok with the ones that aim to stay true to the input. I'm not ok with upscalers that change colors, proportions and invent completely new faces and details.

Personally I draw the line where image generators output finished/near finished articles. I'm also against any generative AI that entirely overpaints the inputs an artist gives them with something similar but synthetic. Imo these outputs are facsimiles and not actually the artists work any longer.

I've been thinking about this a lot. I'm very outspoken against generative AI but I find it acceptable where it actually is used as a tool and not as a replacement for artists. But what makes me feel uncomfortable is the overlap with software and companies that push unethical or criminal use cases.

We're finally working again on Level Design, and now we have wayyyyy more assets, props, textures, and other fancy stuff to populate and decorate our levels with!

Some people are absolutist in their rejection of AI because even for use cases as an actual tool the models might be trained unethically. I recently shared a project that I used a depth estimation model for. Imo this is a legitimate use case as a tool but still I feel a bit torn about it.

I follow a bunch of good artists but so many who once shared their work on Twitter or who I know personally have not shown up here.

It's chill as usual but i wish more artists would have found their way here over the past year.

You want to spread some positivity? Just highlight an artist or dev that’s inspired you and just get others to check them out. Don’t be afraid to talk about who you find inspiring and has influenced your work. We don’t work in a vacuum we are inspired by our peers so share that.

PhilipK was my main inspiration to become a texture/material artist. Some of his stuff from 2009 - 17 years ago - has some qualities that i still find difficult to match. www.philipk.net

Even years ago when Twitter was still "good" it always rubbed me the wrong way when something someone tweeted was reported as news. This is like this but worse. The average media competency hasn't improved at all.

Of course Tim Sweeney has to come to defend the worst public AI we have seen yet.

How did we arrive at a situation that a real company like Sony has less weight to throw around than a scammy company like OpenAI that operates at unprecedented losses and it's not even a secret?
