When liberals assert the judiciary needs stronger ethics rules bc duh, it shrugs.

When conservatives assert that a chapter on climate science in a judiciary reference manual hurts their oil & gas buds' feelings, it caves.

For today's bonus issue of "One First," I wrote about Monday's @nytimes.com scoop regarding Chief Justice Roberts having clerks and other employees sign non-disclosure agreements, and why #SCOTUS's transparency problems run far deeper and wider than just NDAs:

Bonus 207: The Court's True Transparency Problem(s)
Monday's New York Times scoop on Chief Justice Roberts having employees sign non-disclosure agreements would hit differently if the justices were *remotely* committed to more transparency elsewhere.

Let's speak plainly.

In a legitimate criminal cases, political appointees don't have to first hollow out U.S. Attorney offices of objecting career prosecutors with integrity; federal judges don't kill the cases at the cradle, and the government doesn't fight tooth and nail to revive them.

D. Minn. Judge Menendez says at start of this a.m.'s hearing on legality of ICE operations in Twin Cities that it's a "case of extreme importance to everyone," & yet the only people who can listen live are credentialed media members.

Yes, the GOP controls Congress. That's why it's key to show Congress COULD stop the madness. And it's not just the DHS bill. Congress could repeal the prior multi-year $75b for DHS; set up a special investigative committee (cf. Watergate); amend the Insurrection Act; etc.

Yes, this 100%. Even more critical upon recalling that Chief Justice Roberts just appointed the guy who sat on the Murguia allegations for years (Tymkovich) to be *chair* of the Judicial Conduct & Disability Committee.
On the blog today, guest blogger @noahdahl.bsky.social proposes reining in the Chief Justice's nearly unilateral and unreviewable power over judicial administration to increase accountability throughout the federal judiciary.

With all that is going on in the world, it might be easy to overlook that the D.C. Circuit appears to have changed its Special Panel (aka Motions Panel) so that it's no longer in place for a month.

I think this change is both really important and really good.

It blows my mind that any of these people are able to trade individual stocks. Park your money in a blind trust or an index fund. If you want to play Wolf of Wall Street, find another job.
NEW: Four days before oral arguments, Justice Sam "stock trader" Alito decides he "will not continue to participate" in a case involving oil companies.

This means that he did participate in certiorari stage proceedings, despite owning relevant stocks.
