Making games no one asked for

En/Fr
After years of games people going "auteur theory is bad because workers of something", guess it's time to re-invent it? 🙃

Skin Deep was this year's reminder that it's a privilege to recognise a developer's handwriting
Skin Deep was one of the great games of 2025 - here's why.

I'm part of the problem because I didn't pay enough attention to Baby Steps earlier this year and now I'm mad at how little baby steps content is out there

In Yoshi's "Loves Me...?" minigame in Super Mario 64 DS, there is a 1 in 4,294,967,296 chance to get 32 consecutive "Loves Me Not" results in a row. While this is astronomically unlikely to have ever happened, a player receiving those results would likely become very distressed.

This is such a cursed game to discover because it is fantastic but no one will believe you. It's like finding an awesome restaurant that serves 10/10 sandwiches and soup but the soup is BLACK and the sandwich TALKS to you and you're like "no no it tastes amazing, just squeeze it so it can't scream"
35. Our Adventurer Guild

I've been enjoying the hell out of this game. Manage and upgrade a guild, hire and level up adventurers, equip them, and send them on quests. Different adventurers have unique quirks you can work around or develop. Tight Tactics!

The OST for The Lemurian Phoenix, The Rise of the Golden Idol's second DLC, has dropped on YouTube.

Was such a pleasure working with @kylemisko.bsky.social for this. He absolutely nailed every track (Ori's Cave, Part I is my fave!). Hope we'll work together again.

My current obsession and explanation for everything wrong with gaming is that the only culture around games is consumerism
This is such a cliched type of post to make so I wanna promise I'm not just leftist-venting, but games really get hurt in all ways by how little time they had before capitalism made it an Industry. Commercialism is so thoroughly baked into gaming culture.

Most people that make the 'in this essay I will—' joke about weird interpretations of art should actually write those essays.

Their interactions with art would benefit immensely from seeing unique instincts and perspectives through to reasoned conclusions, rather than flippantly dismissing them.

I put less than 4h into Drop Duchy and I have 40 achievements... (out of 181!!!!)
This is ridiculous and honestly feels disrespectful.

But it makes sense for a game that's mostly about metaprogression. One of those games where you're likely to sabotage a run for long terms benefits 😬

This goes for everything btw. “How do I keep up with books/movies/games/whatever?” is really just a way of asking how to keep up with the zeitgeist, and buddy, please be weirder about the stuff YOU like. The “zeitgeist” is just 20 people who all got sent free copies and had a spare afternoon

No disrespect whatsoever, but the response to “how do you keep up with everything?” might need to switch from a list tactics for overwhelming yourself to instead suggesting that some of y’all get way deeper into your Weirdo bag

I do think one of the most embarrassing things about this website is the way everyone turns into a tutorial pop-up any time there's word of even the slightest wave of new users.

Sometimes it's a MC score based on a very narrow subset of people predisposed to like a thing, sometimes it's how many copies a game sold, and nowadays it's how many people are playing it at the same time.
Ultimately it's all the same, the "best" games are the ones with the higher marketing budget.
Saw a forum post decrying a GOTY pick by citing its modest concurrent user count on Steam, and if you think that is in any way a useful indicator of a game's quality then you shouldn't be allowed to use the computer.
