Had a dream that there was global panic about the world running out of oxygen, Nintendo was the only video game company to make a statement about it, and the internet collectively spent its final hours on Earth debating whether Nintendo was being genuine or not

sometimes when people complain about "metroidvania" not being descriptive enough to be a good categorical term (lol) I gotta wonder what exactly they think like platformer, classical, or shakespearean is really telling you

I love how sifting through all the crud means I can find some truly unique games that set my brain on fire, but it comes at the cost of seeing how many of the projects on Steam are all just doing the exact same thing

The hottest indie game is about breeding cats with ADHD and dyslexia
It’s been a long road to release for Mewgenics developers Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel.

The game you are about to play is a product of its time. It may depict the PS3, which was commonplace in society. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.

been looking forward to this episode for actual years! it’s BABY STEPS time and we get all the way into the walking, the improv, the nudity, the glories and ignomities of this sprawling, mud-flinging, masculinity-interrogating modern classic. might also be our longest standalone ep ever?! buckle up!

Every time there's this kind of drama and cancel adjacent vibe, I'm baffled by the amount of people who just outright lie. Usually just to make things worse, but sometimes also to argue.
And then there's a good chance that stuff gets repeated because it's cool to be mad at popular people.

But also feel free to not partake in any media for any reason! There's plenty of good stuff to spend your time on

I'm gonna have to ask every person who said stuff along the lines of "finally a reason to hate McMillen" to provide proof that they've never played a Neil Druckmann game or watched a movie with Gal Gadot.
They're freaking unpaid guest meows, and people had to go look for that list of guests.

A lot of the responses, this one included, really miss the point that there's nothing a game could do or prepare for if gamers decide it must fail

Maybe not making a bad (and rushed by their own words) would have helped a little to not have it land as a target, but otherwise it's just random chance
"Internal feedback on Highguard prior to its reveal "was quite positive," Sobel wrote: There was, apparently, a widespread expectation that the game was a sure-fire hit."

Getting playtests and mock reviews done by external partners can be a really good idea.
Laid-off Highguard developer cuts loose on the reaction to the infamous Game Awards reveal trailer: 'We were turned into a joke from minute one'
Former lead technical artist Josh Sobel says false assumptions and ragebait were major contributors to Highguard's failure to connect with players.

Also, if we take "retro" to mean 80s - 90s, most contemporary magazine reviews were worthless.

Here's EGM's Gimmick review, where only one of the four critics appears to have actually played it for more than five minutes, if at all.

(It's brutally hard and has a bespoke physics system)

social media + direct to consumer advertising has made pre-release reviews feel more disposable than ever.

so, what exactly is the point of a videogame review these days? does anyone really care about them?

I love when I write a big alt text and want to copy paste it, but slightly end the selecting mouse drag outside of the alt text box and bsky decides to delete everything I've written because surely clicking (well, releasing a click) 4 pixels outside means you wanted to waste a few minutes.

It's so refreshing seeing someone say all the right things 😌

It's obviously what I've been screaming about recently, that games have no culture besides marketing. But the core of it here, which I think a lot of people would have skipped, is the introspective part.
