The phrase "pick yourself up by your bootstraps" doesn’t make sense to me. Turns out the original meaning was to describe something impossible, like levitating yourself by picking yourself up by your shoes. That's why it's impossible to pick yourself up by your bootstraps. Because it's impossible.
