I cannot emphasize how much “be the news” is the opposite of what I was taught about how to be a good journalist and strikes me as an excellent way to churn out elite solipsism that has nothing to do with the public interest and everything to do with self promotion www.nytimes.com/2026/01/13/b...

I just finished a three-year term as an editor at an international relations journal. I began at the start of the LLM era but ended right in the middle of it. Our volume of submissions tripled and our desk reject rate rose to 75%. I have some thoughts.

Seriously, nobody in Europe is as staunchly transatlanticist as the West German Christian Democrats of Friedrich Merz' generation. Their response to the reality of Trump II is to... simply be in utter denial of that reality

Just now remembering an American troll who replied "try saying that in Tower Hamlets!". I was delighted to inform him that *I lived in Tower Hamlets at the time* but the idea that an American would even know that borough by name, specifically as a byword for "Mordor-style hellscape", was baffling.

But like, to be clear, Greenlanders are *already* EU citizens? The US planning to take over Greenland by force functionally means that the US is planning to put EU citizens under occupation??

(2/2) It's like every platform is now running the kinds of ads that even three years ago would have been restricted to porn sites, and I'm not gonna lie, the fact that everyone seems to be getting desperate all at once ain't an encouraging sign!

It's actually kind of striking how rapidly the ads on ostensibly respectable platforms have changed in the last 12–18 months. I've been getting penis enlargement scams and pyramid schemes that don't even bother to pretend to be otherwise on YouTube. (1/2)

Wait the smoke filled rooms were also just individual crazy rich people though. There have always been powerful rich people and there have never been abstract essentialist entities of any kind
I honestly think that the main revelation of Trump 2 has been that there is no big C Capital running things behind the scenes anymore and pulling strings. There's individual rich crazy people with their thumbs on the scale, but there's no smoke filled rooms
this is a five alarm Fucking With The Money fire and between this and the Greenland threats the rich assholes might want to wake up and realize this dude is going to cost them way more than any wealth tax will

It's true of Cassidy as the 50th vote for RFK, and it's true of Democrats unanimously confirming Rubio: part of the point of Senate confirmation is that you as a senator, and not just the president alone, own the policy and political consequences of what you have done.
FOX NEWS: Do you regret voting to confirm RFK Jr?

CASSIDY: I'd rather not make this personal. It should be about the health of the patient.
