"the vast majority of you won't have to worry about this" I don't even fucking care if it turns out it's only three people that have to worry about this, it shouldn't be implemented, period. Keep cancelling your Nitro, they're clearly noticing
Discord is already starting to walk things back a little, so people should keep doing what they're doing (cancel Nitro, leave feedback/criticism, direct contact through support tickets/phone/email/etc)

a response to the @rascal.news article on yazeba's bed & breakfast, clarifying some misunderstandings and (hopefully) providing a clearer explanation of what happened

It's important to note that one of the things Rascal did to market the piece was talk about how long they spent working on it, despite not reaching out to key people, properly fact checking claims, or structuring damning quotes within proper context. Why would anyone trust them after this?
Chase Taylor-Carter contacted me this morning to rectify Rascal's oversight. While I would have gladly given statements or an interview prior to the story's publication, the article that went to print left me uncertain that any information I gave would be taken in good faith, so I declined.
I wrote about three times as much of Yazeba's as the other contractors combined, and have another title through PCG that SJG renegotiated — so my stake and losses are actually significantly greater than anyone Rascal quoted.

Neither the other contractors nor Rascal ever reached out to me.

It has certainly been baffling to see Rascal's owners tout that it took six writers six months to complete their Yazeba's article only to turn around and say they were unaware I was a contractor. I'm credited as the book's cocreator and PCG's website "About" page lists all three of their employees.

That doesn't mean anything legally. But I struggle to understand why anyone would want their names and work removed from an award-winning book that paid them astonishingly well. From my perspective, Jay and PCG extended us all more good will and grace in a crisis than any other publisher would have.

The best I've ever gotten was around .20 a word and that was already like an incredible rate
To push back against $2 is unimaginable to me
In ttrpg freelancing, $0.12-0.15 per word is a common "standard" rate, and $0.25/word is broadly considered a pretty good/ethical one.

The other contractors wrote (by generous estimate) about 10k words each, bringing their payouts so far to over $2.30/word, on a project plagued with hidden costs.

Hi! As Jay's co-creator — while also being a fellow *contractor* at PCG, not associated with any of the business decisions being made — I think this summary of events laid out by Xeni is accurate to what I remember of the unfolding distribution problems that kept Yazeba's off of shelves.
When Rascal opened up to questions/criticisms of their article on the slow death of Yazeba's Bed & Breakfast , I foolishly thought I could get my feedback written and submitted on time.

That was a foolish hope, but I turned it into a more comprehensive doc here: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

when intervening around a labor dispute, it would seem reasonable to furnish your readers with context needed to interpret the claims made by either side of the dispute. rascal's beat is the tabletop industry. i'd say that makes them more qualified than most to supply reliable info on going rates.

on the topic of labor reporting. i find the defense of the article as published centering an emotional truth and not intending to get bogged down in numbers baffling. in a dispute between a worker and a boss, the material conditions are of high importance!

in addition, the main actors in this conflict are overwhelmingly trans women. whichever way an audience came down on this, pretty clearly a doll was gonna get harassed. this was a predictable outcome, and anyone pretending otherwise is either being ignorant or disingenuous

if the overwhelming majority of readers read an article and take the same message away then regardless of intent, you clearly have some hand in that outcome. it is wishful thinking to assume that on today's internet people will not boil any conflict down to the oversimplified manichean form.

that out of the way. i take issue with general defense made that rascal had no control over how the article was received and aren't to blame for people taking certain things away from it. whilst this is clearly true to an extent, it only gets you so far.
