Nov. 10, 1975 The tradition at Mariners' Church in Detroit is to ring a bell 29 times: To remember each of the 29 men who died on the Edmund Fitzgerald: 30th time: To honor all sailors lost on the Great Lakes: 31st time Added after the death of Gordon Lightfoot in 2023 to honor the songwriter.
