30. He/They. Fan of Doctor Who, maths and video games. I have a Doctor Who blog that you can read right here: https://thebrainofmobius.wordpress.com

Thinking about the new series of Doctor Who has made me think about fan-counting systems, which made think about the number zero and Castrovalva, which made me think about new beginnings, which made me think about the new series of Doctor Who, which made me...
Counting From Scratch: Castrovalva and The Number Zero
If you’re reading this on the day of publication then it is Friday 11th April 2025, the day before the start of the new season of Doctor Who, which we will call Day Zero. To be more precise, it’s Day Zero of Season Two (2025) of Doctor Who, or it’s Day Zero of Series 15 if you’re ignoring the break in numbering since the Disney co-funding partnership in 2023, or it’s Day Zero of Season 41 if you’re also ignoring the break in numbering since the show’s 21st century revival in 2005 (respect!).

Watching a very intense battle between an old bloke and a refreshments trolley man. Only one person can command control of this Crosscountry carriage aisle. Who will drop first?

NEW BLOG! In which I realise I still have more things to say about maths teachers in Doctor Who. Yes I know, there’s actually more than one!

Doctor Who and The Maths Teachers

I have a question for you: do you know how many beans make five? I can hear you already shouting back at me. “It’s half-term week! School’s out! Let the teachers rest!” But I think there’s always time to learn something new. Especially when it’s about maths!…

I have a question for you: do you know how many beans make five? I can hear you already shouting back at me. “It’s half-term week! School’s out! Let the teachers rest!” But I think there’s always time to learn something new. Especially when it’s about maths! Doctor Who has had a number of teachers appear over the years, starting with Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright back in 1963, who taught science and history respectively.

It’s 3pm and I’m trying to work but all I can think about is what if Mary Whitehouse was alive and kicking in the year 2025.

What does she think about TikTok? MrBeast? The Online Safety Act?

And then she discovers there’s hot people in Doctor Who, has a heart attack, and promptly dies again.

I have started watching Succession and my favourite thing so far is how they only have enough money for one piece of music.

An unexpected new entry in the Untitled Goose Game franchise, but a welcome one nevertheless.
Netflix have announced a new four part crime thriller by Charlie Brooker, starring Paddy Considine, Georgina Campbell and Lena Headey.

It’s called UNTITLED CHARLIE BROOKER PROJECT (working title) and is now in production.

NEW BLOG! In which I have an oddly specific critique of In The Forest of the Night.
What would OFSTED make of Danny Pink?

It’s now September, which means back-to-school time for millions of children. So I thought I’d write something with a school theme. And what better school to write about than the first one ever to feature in Doctor Who: Coal Hill School? But I’m not going to…

As a mathematician and a Doctor Who fan, I adore Christopher H. Bidmead’s work on Doctor Who, which showed how maths and science can be powerful, mysterious and poetic. Castrovalva remains a personal favourite. I wish I had the chance to meet him. RIP

No-one has yet discovered any warlike purpose to be served by the theory of numbers or relativity, and it seems very unlikely that anyone will do so for many years… But the ‘great game’ of chess is primarily psychological, a conflict between one trained intelligence and another.” – G. So one of the key selling points of MS Excel for financial services is that when you calculate something in a spreadsheet the answer is correct…
Microsoft copilot for Excel has a warning not to use it for “business critical” calculations because the answer may not be accurate.

Would someone explain why I might *ever* want to use a spreadsheet where results are unreliable?

Just finished watching Wednesday Season 2: Part One. It’s perfectly fine, and generally an improvement on Season One IMHO.

But I’m seeing a bunch of discourse saying it’s bad because it’s “not faithful” to the source material. And regardless of whether it is, I find that argument baffling.
