😳 Thanks for the warning 😳
⚠️ Potential danger: “Snowcrete” sliding off slanted roofs ❄️🧊

With temps rising above 32 today, be especially alert for snow and ice shedding from roofs of homes, schools, and businesses, it can pose a serious hazard.

Be alert for this and avoid prone areas.

REJOICE! It is above freezing in DC. 💃🕺

Just barely, but it counts.

233 hours at or below freezing, now concluded with a 2p of 33. This ends a 9-day streak at or below freezing. It is tied for 5th longest on record since 1872! Only second time this long since 1936.

It’s a very Monday Monday. Please enjoy this delightful video of construction kitties.
Be like construction kitties. Form a union with your coworkers and get your fair share!

My 7-yo has suddenly adopted the phrase “bro!” (Also stylized as “yo bruh”.) Where did this come from? He hasn’t been to school in over a week! 🤣

As the parent of a not-long-ago-formerly 5yo, I agree, this pilot just made this kid’s day. After everything, a moment of pure kid joy is priceless. I hope he asked every question his little mind could think of. 💗

😵‍💫😫 Tuesday better happen, universe. My kiddos need school.
Due to persistent freezing temperatures and unsafe conditions, APS will remain closed on Mon, Feb 2, and we plan to open two-hours late on Tuesday. Some cleared areas have refrozen or been covered again by street plowing.

Normally I rank February second to January in “worst months of the year” but this is a really good point and the evenings are already noticeably longer than they were in December
A quick reminder of what #BigFebruary is about…
Thanks to the magic of the cosmos, we start gaining daylight much faster in Feb than in Jan. Over 20 mins a week - setting us up for Spring.

This chart is by @neilrkaye.bsky.social and is one of my all time favourites.

You mess with one union, you mess with all unions. Sending solidarity to all in this march today, and hugs to the children who are recovering from tear gas exposures. 💔
Thousands of union members staged a nonviolent march today. iCE gassed the crowd of nurses and teaches. The neighborhood is in a cloud. Flash bangs are being fired.

This was yesterday, but I’m pretty sure if I go outside now it’ll look the same. Nina Park, along 24th St S at S Hayes. Tagging @arlingtondes.bsky.social for visibility on both locations!

It’s like the ancient ritual of a toast, where you spill wine into each other’s cups under the guise of boisterousness and really to make sure if your cup is poisoned, theirs is poisoned, too.
As birthday traditions go, the one i feel like covid should have ended is where the birthday person spits all over the cake and then insists everyone eats it

For the record, I hate this. Bitter cold, snowcrete, ice everywhere, I hate it. ~60 days until the average peak bloom; bring on the tourists and cherry blossom kitch.
Colder than the last few mornings to start our Saturday. Low of 11 in DC is second coldest this season. Cold is around peak today as winds increase from offshore storm. Should struggle to get out of the single digit wind chills. Near 20 highs.

Full forecast: www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2026...
CWG Live: Cold near peak intensity today as gustier winds deliver frigid wind chills
A snowstorm is missing us to the south, but it will increase our wind this afternoon through Sunday. Wind chills might not get out of the single digits today.

I cried at a stoplight at this story. I didn’t catch all the Spanish, but when Jesús’s friend came on and cried, I wept with a broken heart. Please listen, even if it is hard to hear.
I very much appreciate my colleague Adrian Florido bearing witness to a terrible loss from his neighborhood. I did not want to listen to this, because I knew it would be heartbreaking, but I’m glad I did.

What a delightful story! Although I like @beckyhammer.bsky.social’s approach better… it’s fun to watch one guy obsess, it’s better to get the entire neighborhood on board with knowledge to enjoy together.

"Our standing rule is: If one of us brings up using GenAI in any of our work, then it's safe to assume we've been assimilated by The Thing and should be burned alive by Kurt Russell," said a game design consultant in the US.
Over 50% of game developers now think generative AI is bad for the industry, a dramatic increase from just 2 years ago: 'I'd rather quit the industry than use generative AI'
The latest GDC survey also found that managers are more likely to use generative AI than their employees.

Tuesday's daily digit — 1/10: The digit may be higher than the temperature in colder areas in the morning (Wind chills below zero). This is hard core cold.

(The digit is a somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a 0-to-10 scale.)

My 7yo has been talking wildly nonstop all day. Poor child was desperate for schedules and stimulus by the end of winter break and this extended in-house time is bringing him right back to that moment.

Suggestions for entertainment for an understimulated wild boy asides from going outside?

When your dog won’t pee in the snow, so you dig a hole down to the dirt so she can smell it and she still won’t pee. But she’s still cute.
