NEW: This week on Whatever This Is, the one word everyone missed from Carney’s speech.

Pluralism.

Pluralism isn’t weakness. It’s an economic super-weapon.

It’s how we survive while others burn down.

We refuse to live in a country that doesn't have room for everyone.

Exactly this. It is completely unhinged for them to act like they continue to have a mandate without holding a new election. Albertans did not knowingly elect a separatist party.
If she must prioritize party unity over the stability of Alberta’s place in Canada - if, in other words, that’s her and her party’s policy - then she can darn well call an election and campaign on the platform: elect us and we’ll have a referendum on sovereignty and we have no idea what would happen

@djclimenhaga.bsky.social: Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi’s challenge this week to UCP MLAs to sign a letter saying they are proud Canadians and opponents of Alberta separatism and promise to make that known to voters is not bad. Not bad at all. #abpoli

This is a terrific piece of rhetorical construction that also happens to be a very good point. A lot of us have been heartened by the courage and integrity so many Minnesotans have shown over this past week, in the face of intimidation and spiteful violence.

Just so we're all clear: the folks using direct democracy to push for Alberta separatism have a problem with....democracy.
Modry adds that the problem of democracy is that it's a "tyranny of the majority over the minority," citing COVID as an example. "If you protect individual rights, you will protect all of societal rights, but the reverse doesn't occur."

A reminder that Bessent is supposed to be one of the more normal ones around Trump.

I would take this as a clear sign the WH is open to (or even keen on) interference in any AB election or referendum.
Bessent pushes Albertan independence from Canada: "Albertans are very independent people. There's a rumor they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got."

This whole thread is quite a trip. Alberta is being hijacked by a handful of deluded morons. #proudcanadian
I'm at Heritage Park, a petition signing location in Stony Plain for Alberta Independence. Folks are lined up waiting to sign, with speakers set to begin at 7:00 pm. Will live tweet below 🧵

100%.
Federally, the @mark-carney.bsky.social government must summon the US ambassador for an explanation and, barring a complete retraction and an apology, expel him in protest.

Provincially, Alberta government needs to pick a side. Are Premier Smith and the UCP loyal to Canada, or separatists?

It was just a matter of time before this administration started eyeing Alberta. I am an Albertan- I can tell you that the majority of us, by far, want to remain Canadian. #proudcanadian

Can’t make Canada the 51st state, so stoke secession. 🤡

I can tell you this is a minority that will not pass. We already had a petition to stay in Canada that reached almost 500k.

Absolutely the fuck not.
"I think the people of Alberta would agree with that sentiment that they would prefer to not be part of Canada and be a part of the US because we are winning."

A pretty uh interesting take from GOP congressman Andy Ogles on Alberta during BBC debate with Greenland minister.
