I had to abandon my initial PhD focus because the EMI archives, once open to researchers, had effectively closed. Instead, I based my work in the BBC WAC. But over the last two years they have simply stopped responding to my queries. Shocking to read that this archive is now effectively closed.
I've had to abandon research because of archive policies like this, and once because a family was unwilling to give me free access - I was just handed selected documents in plastic wallets. The BBC may construct narratives, but at least with access to the archives we could see how they did it.
“They have clearly shifted to it being a resource for BBC business priorities. The corporation no longer recognises the value that working with scholars brings, despite the fact this is an archive of how public money was spent over most of a century.” #history 📚🗃️ #BBC

For all of the educators trying to deal with AI, I did a deep dive in early June and these are the four articles I decided to assign to my students.

1. This is the longest of the bunch, but so wonderfully comprehensive.

We did the math on AI’s energy footprint. Here’s the story you haven’t heard.
The emissions from individual AI text, image, and video queries seem small—until you add up what the industry isn’t tracking and consider where it’s heading next.

This week we ran our #LibInspo competition.

Five students, from across all three faculties, pitching ideas to improve the student experience in the library.

We work with the winner to try and make their idea a reality, and they get £500 for themselves.

And it was BRILLIANT.

I am absolutely delighted to announce the release of my latest CD, and my first on the aptly named Danacord label! I recorded on the wonderful #erardpiano in the Lyons Concert Hall @york.ac.uk - Bartók particularly likes the inside cover...

I spent the last 3 days closeted with @danpianoman.bsky.social in the wonderful acoustic of York Uni’s Lyons Concert Hall with only a mic and some dead Germans for company. Here’s the trusty pairing of my 1875 Ottensteiner copy and the 1856 Erard in our very last take, Schubert arr. Carl Baermann..
