Whenever people claim archaeology isn't inherently political, some questions to ask them:

Who "owns" heritage?
What gets protected and why?
What stories are being told/preserved?
Whom do those stories serve?
Who gets to tell those stories?
Who controls access to the belongings and stories and why?
🏺 Again and again - our discipline has been crucial to genocide. Pretending otherwise is complicity.
Israel, which has obliterated most of Palestine’s archeological and heritage sites, including ancient churches, mosques, and temples, has suddenly discovered an urge to protect one from Palestinian ‘neglect’. It just so happens to be in the West Bank.

Archaeologists have analyzed 16 pieces of ocher unearthed at Neanderthal sites in Crimea and Ukraine. One piece was scraped into a crayon-like shape, and its tip had been resharpened—possibly a tool for drawing.

Raise your hand if you're sick of the internet being filled with

1) liars and grifters
2) fake AI slop
3) bogus conspiracy theories

Resist it by engaging and boosting truthful, fact-based content. We have to act deliberately to retrain the algorithmic gremlins

I was hoping it was a pottery burnishing stone, but there is no polish anywhere on it. It's a gizzard stone. #archaeology
