This is especially useful when dealing with logotypes or wordmarks.
Random 3d tip that will help like, 2 people. But you can import Illustrator files into 3ds max as long as they're saved as version 8. And you can also import SVG files into Blender. I find that sometimes, it's far easier to deal with curves and complex shapes in Illustrator than curves in a 3d app.
