Mini fudge When I return from the counselling room It is perched on my keyboard Between the enter key and the number pad Orange and purple, a tiny sunset on a dark slab How it arrived is a mystery, I push away suspicion and Unwrap. We give babies glucose gel for painful procedures In the doctor’s surgery as a child I held a lollipop. Sugar full,cherry sweet Washing away the needle’s sting. The sticky fudge coats my tongue. I smooth out the wrapper and fold it into a tiny fan. Outside my office, footsteps pad down the corridor

An Impolilte Encounter As I wandered on the chase, I came across a hiding place Of what creature I knew naught; So deeper in, for clues, I sought. The hole was fetid, dark, and dank, But further still the tunnel sank, Until at once I spied a flame, Not wild and free, but hearth’d and tame. The queerest visage met me then, For this was not some vixen’s den. No wilded beast beneath the loam. It was, in fact, a crafted home. The table set, the pot a-simmer; It seemed I'd come in time for dinner. I turned to leave unnoticed, when I met the hovel’s denizen. Its stature small, its frame so lean, Its eyes so red, its skin so green. It picked its nose with yellow claw And slinked to block my only door. “Hello, my dear,” it spat and gnashed; Its razor teeth in firelight flashed. “Pray join me for a brief repast, I fear it might well be your last.” “What be you then?” I asked the sprite. “An Imp,” said he, with sharp delight. He did not ask about my breed, Caring not to name his next fine feed. But hubris proved a deadly trap. He did not expect my jaws to snap. With just one bite the deed was done; Repast was had but just for one. So should you wander on the chase And come upon a hiding place, My little tale holds this decree: There is nothing left to fear but me.

A poem by Francesca L Rolle: Title: Impetuous Visitors Poem: The imps are inside my brain, Flicking on switches and tapping out a tango on my frazzled neurons desperate for some sleep, The imps like to party and they don't care about the inky black pooling beneath my eyes, They flash lights through my irises to create colourful strobes, And sing whistling tunes that echo between my ears through the day, I've asked them to leave but they don't seem to hear me, They'll keep up their tippy tapping until the last nerve ending has frayed, With no more fun left to have, They'll depart in a hurry, Leaving debris strewn about my mind not quite what it once was.

Hillman Imp When I was young, a mate bought a car with the engine at the back. To drive it straight, you put a bag of potatoes, or a paving slab, in the boot. Which, of course, was at the front. It leaked water, let in the rain. Always overheated, despite the water cooling.
