I love quiet days of sunshine and bitter cold. I love mince pies and morning mist. I love snow, dark mornings, blackbirds and robins. I love new books and detective programmes. I love dusk in the late afternoon, long evenings. I love January.

Mary Shelley’s novel ‘Frankenstein’ was published on this day in 1818. Here’s a poem that I had published in Magma last year, in which I imagine Mary Shelley - who was also a young widow - as a companion in my grief.

Merry Christmas to poets and poetry lovers everywhere!

As a seasonal gift to you all, @iambapoet.com has a new, simpler web address:

iamb.uk

It's not yet 'official' across the site – but it works right now.

URLs for individual poets' pages may misbehave for a while till everything settles in. 😉🎄

Final #ekphrastic poem of 2025, and a second consecutive outing for poetry inspired by the work of Frank Auerbach.

rich in black and white,
scraped her back to canvas,
