This summer, we returned to Amsterdam.

I’m only reflecting now, because reflection takes time, and last week working in Oslo brought everything back.

So many policies meant to improve conditions for ECRs end up with a penalty for the ECR. My university makes us do this too, issue open calls for projects designed by a PhD or postdoc candidate even when named in grant 🤦‍♀️
Best case scenario is wasted time for candidate & other ECRs who apply 🤬
it has happened to me twice today at 2 different universities that I (senior postdoc) wrote a grant together with a PI, and the department tries to kick me off the grant. One was awarded (and my name is listed on the grant), and now the department says the team will have to advertise my position.

I tried making a figure explaining how the sum of variances law can be understood as the diagonal of a bivariate normal, and how a correlation between the two antecedent variables — such as under assortative mating — will result in greater variance and more cases above a threshold.
