Hawthorn trees heavily laden with fruit are a vital lifeline for thrushes and other birdlife trying to make it through the winter.

And by pooping out the seeds far and wide, so is the favour returned.

Nature is all about relationships.

Cotterite is an exceedingly rare form of quartz known from one Irish locality in Co. Cork. I was privileged to be present when Ben (7) brought it into the museum @nmireland.bsky.social Full story just published in Irish Naturalists’ Journal @injournal.bsky.social

Here is a video of a frozen creek that had begun to thaw, and the water was flowing beneath the thin ice on top. I took this because it was soothing and wonderfully bloopy and I wanted to listen to it for hours. You are all welcome to enjoy it, too. Let your brain settle here and rest for a moment.

My 7yo son is such an inveterate bookworm that pals regularly ask me for reading recommendations which might get their kids - especially boys - reading too.

So this week, I turn the reins of my column to the man himself, so he can give you his BOOKS OF THE YEAR.
