Hi! I'm Eric and I'm running for the Minneapolis Board of Estimate and Taxation.

What's that, you ask? The "BET" is an elected council that decides how much the city can levy in property taxes to fund public services like parks and street repairs.

Peavey Plaza – Seasonal Standalone Public Restroom Completed as part of a capital improvement project renovating the Peavey Plaza in 2019, the seasonal standalone public restroom trailer is a two-restroom trailer that was specially designed to sit at the corner of 12th Street and Nicollet Avenue. DID had previously determined the need for more downtown restrooms and completed a pilot of temporary porta potties downtown, including one at Peavey Plaza. When the larger capital improvement project to rehabilitate Peavey Plaza initiated, Public Works staff said they knew that location worked well for a restroom because of DID’s work. In addition, there was funding from the state and private partners for the project. Because of this very unique situation, they were able to incorporate the restroom into the capital improvement project. When Public Works reviewed off-the-shelf units to fit the location, they were cost prohibitive, the wrong size, etc. Instead, the City built a restroom trailer specific to that location, aligning it with the utility hookups in the Peavey Plaza mechanical room underneath the sidewalk. Though the City constructed and owns the trailer, it was originally managed by Green Minneapolis, who hired the Downtown Improvement District (DID) for maintenance. After Green Minneapolis left the contract, DID contracted with the City to operate and maintain the Peavey site, including programs, the fountain, greenery, and the restroom trailer, etc. DID staff said the first question they get asked every year, even before the fountains turn on, is “when do the restrooms open?” The trailer averages 70-110 uses a day in nice weather. If there is an event nearby, usage increases. Public Works staff described Peavey Plaza as a very unique opportunity, one that has not occurred since. Costs • Initial cost to build and install the trailer: $79,000 • Faucets usually need to be replaced once a year due to routine wear and tear, costing around $400 in material and labor.… Ongoing challenges DID staff said they have experienced people pulling the soap dispensers off the wall, as well as taking the toilet paper. Thankfully, after some trial and error, they have found toilet paper holders which are fairly effective at preventing people from taking the rolls of toilet paper. They occasionally also experience people going in and attempting to take a full bath, but the Ambassadors watch for that type of activity. They also know drug use occurs within the restroom. DID staff said if someone is in the restroom for longer than 10 minutes, the Ambassadors knock on the door once; if no response they knock again, and if there is still no response, they will unlock the door to ensure no one has passed out. Though rare, if they see two individuals go into the same restroom, the ambassadors try to intervene sooner. About once a week the Ambassadors have an issue getting someone out of the restroom. However, situations rarely escalate beyond the Ambassadors, who are quite successful at getting people to move along. In the 2025 season, they only had one incident where Emergency Medical Services were called due to an overdose in the restroom. DID staff said the key to the restroom’s success is the Ambassador staffing, “You need someone to keep an eye out. If not, people would just go in there, lock it, and claim it as their own.” Public Works staff agreed that the restroom needs to be monitored to keep it safe and usable. According to DID staff, the downside of the Peavey Plaza restroom trailer is it is seasonal. This is because the mechanical room where the pipes are located is not insulated and would be suspectable to freezing.

I have favorite beers from Mayor Frey, Council Member Palmisano, three incoming Park Board Commisioners (Jason Garcia, Kedar Deshpande, and Daniel Engelhardt), and Steve Brandt. I have promises for a couple more, but I gotta say I'm a little bummed I don't have more yet!

I spent my evening advancing the cause of hard-hitting journalism by emailing everyone who won a municipal election in Minneapolis or St. Paul (25 people!) to ask them about their favorite Minnesota beer. The Strib can’t be trusted to do this. Only I can.

2025 didn't just have the highest number of voters, it had the lowest percentage of down-ballot apathy in the race for Board of Estimate & Taxation in at least the last three mayoral elections. Undervote rate (people leaving this race blank) went down from 34% to 27%.

With 42,000 (‼️) votes, it appears I will be elected to the Board of Estimate and Taxation.

Thanks to everyone who helped out or lent some energy to our humble campaign. I ran on my desire to help fund a brighter future for Minneapolis and I will do everything I can to come through for our city.

My preferred voting system is when a candidate with my exact ideological positions, who is also very handsome, runs against a dumb idiot who voters hate and who doesn't campaign whatsoever. All other elections are unfair and hide the will of the people.
