MUST READ 👇

"It may feel like we’re doing something [by scrolling & reacting] but...we are experiencing an impact rather than having one"

"When your enemy wants you disoriented your ability to focus is an important means of self-defense"

The best we can do right now is find our lane & focus.
I wrote about Trump's executive orders, including his attacks on trans and undocumented people, and how we should be orienting ourselves to defy fascist violence in this moment. This piece includes commentary from @chasestrangio.bsky.social and @silkys13.bsky.social.
A Brutal Beginning: Orienting Ourselves Amid the Shock and Awe
We must be prepared to live and act defiantly, deriving no legitimacy from the illegitimate brutes who would govern us.

I have been thinking a lot about how becoming more informed and aware over the next four years in a way that’s really useful might mean more books about history and less getting sucked into the daily firehose of bad news which is the present
I was raised in a multi-generational organizing family and I can say with firsthand knowledge that 20th century organizers read theory and they studied history and literature quite closely

The need to do that hasn’t changed

If studying history isn’t part of your organizing work, change that

Ashley’s right, and there are too many people in this country who just don’t think children are people, with rights and feelings and dignity and full inner lives!
We have to stop thinking that what affects children won’t affect us. It always has and it always will. We could change the whole world—no hyperbole—by truly putting the welfare of children first, with all the considerations of their full human rights.

i am always willing to teach Black people the basics of how to play spades in a safe space.

after learning the basics, you graduate to advanced, where the space necessarily becomes unsafe, as you have to be prepared for the real world of spades playing, where your granny will cuss you out.
I played spades for the first time in June 2005 at a family cookout in Memphis. My own grandmother cursed me out so bad during that game I haven’t played since!

In this thread, I will explore some ideas on why Tokyo is so fashionable. Some of it does have to do with culture, but as you'll see in the thread, culture is also shaped by political, economic, and institutional forces. IMO, one should look for structural reasons for outcomes.

thinking about the guy last week who spent 48 hours constantly emailing me to call me "a DEI hire" and explained that he knew i was a DEI hire because, of course, i was hired in the first place, and how can a negro get a job like mine on merit?

It’s a classic that everyone should see
Wow! Just watched S6 E13 of Deep Space Nine, Far Beyond the Stars. It’s a tour de force from all involved. Simply one of finest episodes of storytelling in the entire Trek canon.

Cis people cannot leave trans people to fight transphobia alone. We have to be willing to be disruptive and uncompromising on their behalf *now*, not any later.

you don’t have to be an organizer to resist fascism, every person is capable of doing the work
As an Indian, as someone who lived in Egypt, and who has, modestly, remained committed to my politics despite that, here are my rules for living under fascist regimes:

4) Learn to live with social complexity. If you write off the possibility of persuading your fellow citizens, fascists win by default. In practice fascist ideologues are few, but people think they can ride that tiger for their own purpose. Read Sarah Ahmed’s organization of hate. Weaponize love.

feel like I’m saying this every day but Dems struggle with doing the right thing because they don’t have core beliefs. it’s a transactional party trying to keep a coalition together rather than a party with a moral center.
This isn't a culture war. This is the only trans congresswoman, ever being bullied through the press and legislation, and having only 1 of hundreds of colleagues stand up for her. They can do more than 1 thing at a time. Defending her will not take so much effort that they can't do their jobs.
Defending Sarah McBride is absolutely the right thing to do, and yet there’s also the risk of being baited into yet another culture war cycle that distracts from the Republican grift. Her statement suggests she wants to move forward, and I think it’s wise to take the cue from her.

This is why “You’re so strong” tastes bitter. They act like our strength comes from some mystical well.

Nah. We scared, but we do it anyway. Being an enabler of an abusive systems will never save us. There is no security in accommodating injustice.
Those Nazis marched through Columbus yelling the n-word and other slurs over a bull horn. You think the black people who marched the next day weren’t scared? Maybe our fear means nothing to you.

Black people in Columbus were scared and marched ANYWAY. Other scared groups just put out statements.

The difference between being a member of the majority and being a member of a minority. Minorities always know all about the majority. We have to.
It’s mostly white people who talk about echo chambers. Maybe you need the internet to meet people with different ideas but the rest of us do not. We know what the “other side” thinks because we deal with it every day! Everywhere! We’re fine. Carry on. Happy Saturday!
