The city had morphed into something watchful and terrifying over the last several weeks. Patrols came in doubles now—soldiers posted at the markets and the gates. The banners that had hung limp through summer were replaced with new ones stitched in grey and black. The change had happened slowly enough that, to anyone not watching, it might have seemed natural. To Ella, it felt like a tightening noose.

She had expected the departure of troops to present an opening. The enemy’s numbers were low, which meant more opportunities for a strike. That’s the way logic dictated it should be, but Jules defied that logic. Those who remained were alert, vigilant.

Since the fleet set sail for Dyta, Jules had turned his attention inward. His patience for subtlety was gone. The searches had begun first in the harbor district, then spread through the city in quiet waves. People were questioned, then gone. Neighbors whispered of cellars ransacked and families taken for “collaboration.”

For the resistance, survival meant movement. The caches Dorra had prepared became lifelines—one night’s food here, another’s rest there. They stocked the old sewers, dragging in crates of dried grain and water barrels, and marked safe paths through the tunnels with chalk symbols. Some nights, Ella slept beneath the noble district; other nights, she lay on cold stone outside the city, where the caves opened into the forest.

The noble district had grown too dangerous for comfort. Felixandrian soldiers had begun patrolling even the ruined estates. Ella had watched them from a distance—one of the newer units, their faces unfamiliar. They were thorough, and worse, disciplined. Every search ended with a report carried directly toward the manse. Jules was no longer pretending he didn’t know they existed. He simply hadn’t found them yet.

ID: 1. write at least one (1) word daily, 1+1+1+1... is way easier than 500, 1000, 1500 words 2. read 12 books min, these books are going to be for my research and personal study, but i can read however many other books i want 3. draw/paint something at least once a month, even if i don’t end up sharing it anywhere 4. play the guitar more, i need to remember to give myself time to just hang out do something for fun good luck, best wishes, best at peace

Writerly Stats Time!

2025 was an interesting writing year. Despite not publishing anything, I wrote ~108,800 words.

It was also the year I went wide with my books, and consequently my biggest year for units sold, at 290!
Bang in the middle for income, though — £308.50.
