Today, Chicago Park District workers used heavy equipment to evict unhoused people from Gompers Park on the Northwest Side.
While residents were given some opportunity to save belongings, all remaining tents and possessions were destroyed this morning.

City officials abruptly delayed plans to clear tents from Gompers Park this week, nearly a month after the city held a rapid rehousing event at the encampment.
Gompers Park Tent Removal Delayed As New Park District Leadership Takes Over
Signs posted at the park said tents on the Foster Avenue side would be banned starting April 1, but city officials held off on clearing the tents at the last minute.

Much of the food from our distribution comes from the Chicagoland Food Sovereignty Coalition. CFSC is a coalition of autonomous #mutualaid groups working to reimagine a resilient, sustainable, and equitable local food system based on food sovereignty.

We have implemented a random number system for the distribution line, which will be more equitable and reduce the need for neighbors to arrive early to the church. Numbers will be distributed at noon.

Our free food and supplies distribution is every Saturday at 12:30pm, and takes place in the dining hall on the east side of Edgewater Presbyterian Church. We have groceries, KN95 masks, Covid tests, toilet paper, laundry detergent, clothing and more!

We do not, nor have we ever, allowed elected officials, politicians, or police into our organizing conversations or meetings, and we do not invite them to our weekly food distribution or to any other events that we organize or sponsor.

We reject any expressions of gratitude from politicians for our work, and understand such statements as tacit admission of their (and their parties'!) own failures.

Mutual aid means building community to care for each other when government leaders fail to, and doing so in the shared understanding that we live in a failed political system.
