It’s a wonderful feeling when you see kids you taught in middle school, now all grown up, cited in the academic papers you’re editing.

Public health depends on citizens accepting scientifically-grounded guidance. When official institutions produce politically-determined science and independent verification infrastructure is eliminated, the capacity for evidence-based health policy collapses, writes Renée DiResta.

My advice to would-be prescriptivists:

• Choose your battles.
• Don’t pick all the most classist “well, if you spoke Greek, you’d know this” battles.
• Know what you’re talking about before you talk about it.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

The right has built a social architecture of state-enforced harassment for implementing ideological and social control through participatory engagement and bottom-up escalation of individual’s grievances via personal media creation and sharing (cf trading up the media chain)

D.C. has more residents than two U.S. states. They pay more per capita in federal taxes than any other state.

But they don’t get a serious seat at the table to decide how they’re governed.

D.C. statehood now.

I will never lose my sense of awe for the miracles that public health and medicine bestow.
27 years ago, two years after the introduction of effective HIV treatment, the Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco’s lesbian and gay community newspaper, ran ‘No Obits’ as its headline.
It was the first edition not to report an AIDS death in almost 15 years.

We are seeing in real time why DC needs the full power and protection of statehood.

Deploying the National Guard to a state without a request from state leaders is unlawful.

The fact that he could do it in the capital city is a massive vulnerability to our entire national democracy.
DC statehood shows Dem weakness goes back a while.

Occasional lip service, but barely even that, and effectively took the stance that hundreds of thousands of US citizens should be disenfranchised because it’s unfair that they’d elect Dem Senators, which would make the Senate less disproportionate.

A ridiculous performance for the tourists.
Drug Enforcement Administration officers patrolling the National Mall.

If you know DC you understand how tremendously goofy this is

I grew up in DC saying “y’all.” At some point during my moves to Boston and California and the cultural changes that meant, I switched to “you guys.” Switching back feels right for so many reasons. Y’all should try it out.
