And? So what?

Christmas sales growth, means: more micro-plastics in our bodies, fatter humans, more extraction of resources, pollution.

Try and find an article about humans caring for their elderly more, or spending more time with their kids. Hard to find. But economic growth, is everywhere.

He's just a blatant liar, pure and simple.

I haven’t quite got my head around it yet, but this is the second time I’ve heard the argument that the US attacked Venezuela to ensure fossil energy is bought in dollars globally, and it seems very compelling.
And there it is! It had nothing to do with drugs. It's the BRICS system threatening the US Petro$ dominance.
"... since 2018, Venezuela has sold 100% of its oil exports to China, with transactions settled in yuan, not dollars. Moreover, Venezuela became an official BRICS+ partner nation in 2024.."
The Real Reason Why the US Overthrew Venezuela
And why it all started in China in November 2025

I've been using Ecosia for almost 6 years.

I highly recommend it. Search the internet, plant trees. Easy.

Ecosia - the search engine that plants trees
Ecosia uses 100% of its profits for the planet and produces enough renewable energy to power all searches twice over.

Some things never change. The US invades another country and takes their oil. The oil companies and shareholders make a fortune. The cycle repeats.

Let's please ensure this cycle never happens in the renewables space, particularly when it comes to lithium. I worry about Chile.

I don't think we should focus on what Trump is doing in the energy space. Renewables are on a massive uptrend. The world needs them. He can't stop their growth.

We should focus on WHY we need to build all of this energy infrastructure in the first place.

Growth. Endless, mindless growth.

It's taken me weeks to fully digest the documentary Greenwashed.

Love it or hate it, it's a conversation starter. We need to discuss the issues this film brings up. I have no interest in discussing solutions without talking about population and consumption in the same breath.

Pretty sure this is what Orwell warned us about.

Orwell was not just warning about communism. He was warning against all authoritarianism.

Being arrested for holding a sign has got to be the first step to brutal authoritarianism.

We have been warned. What will we do next?
Left: Greta Thunberg arrested for holding a placard in London

Right: Labour's Baron Hain, "This gov is treating Palestine action as equivalent to ISIS or al-Qaeda, which is intellectually bankrupt, politically unprincipled and morally wrong. I'm deeply ashamed"

Yes! Spending time in forests and nature is associated with almost endless positive health effects.

We must recognise that in Ireland start treating these places are crucial to our health, not just profit.
A reminder that 90% of Ireland's so-called 'forests' are industrial plantations, virtually empty of nature.

It doesn't have to be like this: with a bit of thought, we could satisfy our timber needs AND have huge tracts of natural forest ecosystems, bursting with life.

And once again, it all comes down to consumption.

300 million people flying this Xmas. To bring presents to people, they probably don't like, to sit in a house, which is probably too warm (or too cold, if in Florida), using too much energy and eating too much.

I love Xmas. I hate overconsumption.
The number of passengers flying from the top 40 countries, led by the US, is expected to hit 309mn between December 15 and January 4. ft.trib.al/j0zQv3H

🧵 1/2. Orwell never disappoints. I have loved George Orwell since reading 1984. I read Down and Out in Paris and London several years ago and liked it even more than 1984.

I have now finished The Road to Wigan Pier and I can't recommend it enough...

I am often told how amazing natural gas is. It's lowering CO2 levels! When I tell people how damaging methane is they like to mansplain to me that all of the methane is burned off in use.

Very few people actually understand how much methane is leaked at every stage of the process.
If the gas networks still can't contain methane after more than a century of practice, why should we trust them with hydrogen?

Humans are changing the climate. End of story.

We should be focusing on care. Caring for each other and caring for the natural world. But instead, what makes the headlines? Growth! Growth! Growth!

GDP, the stock market, box office results. Growth!

An easy way is to start with tech. Move from giant tech companies, to smaller, open source ones.

Here's a great list.

Best advice I can give to anyone:

1. Read Iain McGilchrist, but don’t idolise him.

2. Understand your mental biases. Yes, we have them!

3. Know that we can’t change anything but ourselves.

4. Be in nature every day.

5. Consume information. Not things.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Many of us having been calling for more deer culling, as they cause traffic accidents, eat tree saplings, etc.

But again, this could be another shift from 1 harmful thing to another, instead of curbing consumption altogether.
