The next International Swan Census is almost here (17/18 Jan). Coverage is looking good, but there's a few small gaps. If you're able to help, please check the below map and get in touch with @webs-gsmp.bsky.social
Birders on Mull, Skye, Orkney & Uists are needed in particular! Thank you!!
1/ Can you help us count Bewick's and Whooper Swans for the International Swan Census on 17-18 January 2026? 🦢

Could we agree that “ecosystem engineer” & “keystone species”

are such loose terms, used vaguely & too broadly, that we should shelve them?
January 8, 2026 at 7:40 AM
Keystone yes, widely mis-interpreted and mis used. Ecosystem engineer - can possibly be saved, but it is being mis used - e.g. Elk/ Moose

looking at a loop on netweather of the 15 minute radar data for this extraordinary storm. Savage beauty. The remaining clifftop homes in Norfolk will get absolutely battered again when the wind and waves go north-easterly during the night and through tomorrow.

I am impeaching Secretary Kristi Noem, who is an incompetent leader and a disgrace to our democracy.

She wreaked havoc in the Chicagoland area and has brought her reign of terror to Minneapolis. One of her rogue ICE agents shot and killed an innocent woman today. It must come to an end.

Re IUCN: Wont this diminish the voice of USA in the more utilitarian debates - I would have thought that was one area where the USA has a strong effect - will USA based NGOs also then loose their footing?

super interesting paper in @conbiology.bsky.social on how different groups feel about 'native' versus non-native species decline in Canada, particularly how White people put a much greater emphasis on nativeness in their response.

How much biotic nativeness matters across human demographic groups
Many central concepts of conservation biology—such as nativeness—are structured by ecological and social factors. However, the social consequences of using these concepts to make conservation decisio...

Ps its a misleading title - there is no attempt in the article to explore whether culls regulate culled populations, but for reducing conflict and promoting outcomes etc
January 7, 2026 at 4:13 PM
Good article - I found these other highlighted texts below interesting - also has lots about changing values - note the Coyote cull total is c68K from a population of 2.89-4Million

For sure - and in this case its more about the habitat loss than the harvesting as waterfowl populations bounce back from mortality very fast - as long as they can produce young

It's fascinating how when an older male elephant starves to death, the narrative is all about the success of their lives & the conservation effort, but if an old tusker had been trophy hunted, I suspect it'd all be about loss of genes, knowledge etc. Double standards? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

How should the discipline of ecology and the community of ecologists respond to the ecological crisis? Is it time that these were put on something more akin to an emergency footing?

Tawny owls normally rely on sound to hunt, but new research being presented today at #BES2025 finds that owls in Glasgow are adapting to noisy roads by using street lights to hunt.

I call BS, I have only found this when the work hasn't gone through independent ethical approval - anyway - ttfn and happy Christmas

Softer than a Mr Whippy - you started the thread Richard - it just seems all a bit rich and holier than thou - I am off to consider why Bluesky is still so dead - here is a parasite from a ducks bum to cheer you up #Zoology
December 18, 2025 at 12:16 AM
Be clear here Richard, this is a difficukt area and mis information dosnt help anyone - many of the alternatives to lethal sampling or alternstive dead tissue have much higher welfare concerns for live animals and IS NOT the same as the BOU statement /end
December 18, 2025 at 12:10 AM
As someone who publishes on tricky topics in aquaculture, fisheries and wildlife using tissue samples regularly - i experience no such barriers as we follow those high ethical standards (use alternatives, use samples from other dead source (as per above), or use schedule 1 (fish)) 2/3
December 18, 2025 at 12:10 AM
You said "whatever the source", and tried to infer that sampling legally harvested animals leads to oublication barriers - thats not the same as these conditions on researchers killing vertebrates which are standard condirions when suitable alternatives exist ... 1/2
December 18, 2025 at 12:03 AM
Actually the irony is brilliant - you choose to start this thread with a picture of a dead fish, held in trophy pose with blood, and its all ok but decide to chastise me about a dead duck used in scientific research - with some people its a lose lose situation 😅
