Did you know our BTO HQ in Thetford was once a Benedictine monastery founded in King Canute’s time (1016-1035)? The site was then taken over by Benedictine Nuns & was run as a Nunnery until 1537. The oldest existing remains here date back to the late 12th century.

The aythya flocks at Abberton today were well scattered. They are mostly Tufteds, Pochard numbers seem very low so far #essexbirding

Awesome bit of Food Web #ecology tackling the Atlantic cod #Predator Alle effect hypothesis and finding Harp seals are a significant consumer #fisheries theconversation.com/are-harp-sea...
Are harp seals responsible for the stalled recovery of Atlantic cod?
Since Atlantic cod fisheries collapsed in the early 1990s, ecosystems have been less productive and have struggled to recover.

Avian influenza (bird flu) still hitting Whooper Swans in Fens around Welney and Ouse Washes. Six dead or ill birds on this one farm, the sick ones too ill to move when approached, constantly shaking their heads. All the way from Iceland to die in a Cambridgeshire field. #ornithology #ukbirding

The NERC review process makes its ‘no resubmissions’ policy particularly egregious

If a grant scores low, it is rejected with no opportunity to address reviews

We’ve just had that; the reviews would have been easy to address

As a result, we can’t submit a revised version to any research council 😢

Solar’s price drop is astonishing: panels are now 98% cheaper than when I first analyzed them in 2004.

Today, building a fence with solar can be cheaper than using wood.

Can hunting truly support conservation? Does fortress conservation offer a sustainable solution for protecting wildlife in the long term? And how do we balance the needs of impoverished communities with the preservation of fragile ecosystems? The latest episode is up! 🌍🦤

Did you know that the two Light-bellied Brent Goose populations – from Canada and Svalbard – largely winter on Strangford Lough and Lindisfarne respectively, while the birds wintering elsewhere in Britain come from the Russian Dark-bellied population?
