The more general back and forth around this online has been interesting in terms of communication during a crisis situation, disinformation and the political leanings of different news outlets. From what I can tell this TL;DR is the correct explanation.
My TL;DR:
The Politico factcheck is technically correct in that more money went to the fire department, but it fails to note that the money that went in did not re-fund services that had to be cut, but instead provided much-needed pay and benefit bumps to firefighters.
