POV: You live in Eastern Europe, next door to Russia

So if you hear "Trump peace plan is 99,9% ready" remember that if that 0,01% is the "territorial issue", it's actually 0% ready. Ukraine will not give up their fortress belt, Putin will not accept anything less. Discussing the other points is pointless, it's just not happening.

In the alternative Universe where Kamala won the election, the war in Ukraine is already over. It was prolonged by Trump helping Russia under the guise of "trying to end the war". Still is.

Ukrainian liberation of Kupyansk caused a lot of anger and despair among Russian military bloggers. "Two Mayors" write that now the offensive in the entire northern front is no longer possible, because elsewhere there are major obstacles. "We defeated ourselves instead of the enemy", they conclude.

Above: front line on January 1st, 2025. Below: front line today. We heard many times of a "total collapse of the front", but in reality, Russian are still stuck in Pokrovsk or Kupyansk for year(s). They captured a ruined building here and some deserted village there, but not a single city in full.

During Watergate, Nixon first denied "Washington tapes" existed, then he refused to deliver them, then he delivered heavily redacted transcripts (as a side result, expression "EXPLETIVE DELETED" entered the daily parlance). Eventually everything was revealed and he quit to avoid impeachment.

When I hear Americans bragging their peace plan is "90% complete", it reminds me of an old schmonzes. So, in some shtetl in Ukraine, a matchmaker takes an assignment to arrange a marriage of Rabinowitz' daughter and Prince of Wales. He says to a friend: "My job is 50% complete: Rabinowitz said yes".

Russian pundit downplays the Kupyansk failure by saying that Kupyansk direction was never a priority, oh well. You don't need to speak Russian to catch the phrase "nye prioritetnoye".

For those of you who still can't get why Russia does this or that, a quote from Dostoyevsky - you need him if you want to understand them. Russians play va banque and despise Western ideals of "accumulating wealth by hard work". So either Putin wins big, or loses big, he's fine either way.

I'm not saying situation in Pokrovsk is good, but I'm saying Russians are trying to capture it for 500 days (since 3rd August 2024). In Kupyansk, Chasiv Yar, Siversk or Vovchansk they are stuck for even longer. All they captured in '25 are barren fields and abandoned villages, not a single city.

I love it when I hear that Trump is offering Ukraine "article 5-like guarantees". He was also offering university-like degrees at "Trump university", affordabilty-like affordability, "release Epstein files-like" release of Epstein files and "steak-like steaks" in Trump steak restaurants.

After Black Sea, Caspian Sea is also no longer safe for Russian ships. I hope Baltic Sea will be next.
🇺🇦 Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, in coordination with the insurgent group “Black Spark,” conducted a targeted operation in the Caspian Sea, striking two Russian vessels, Kompozitor Rakhmaninov and Askar-Saridja, allegedly used for military logistics. Rebel intel enabled the precision strike.

If it was a 1980's thriller, negative reviews would be like "come on, so the US president is behaving like a Russian asset, he's bragging about murdering people, he's openly taking bribes from tech moguls and nobody does anything about it? implausible, massive plot hole!"

Why the idea that "demilitarization of Donbas can protect Ukraine" is unpopular in Europe? We learn from history. France was supposed to be protected from German invasion by demilitarization of Rhineland. Germany re-militarized it unilaterally in 1936 and destroyed France in 1940.

It's nice that Marco Rubio wants Ukraine to be prosperous, but here's a little reminder: post-Soviet countries that managed to join NATO/EU in 1999-2004 (Poland, Lithuania, Estonia etc.) are now quite prosperous indeed, unlike the unfortunate ones that didn't make it.
🇺🇸🇺🇦 Talks about a Prosperous Ukraine in Miami

Marco remains one of the U.S. politicians who listen to the Ukrainian position. His remarks in Miami sounded hopeful and consistent.

If you are wondering what happens if Zelensky is forced to step down as a result of the corruption scandal - actually, not much. By constitution he would be replaced by the next in succession, Stefanchuk. He is from the same party, sharing the same views, just as (un)likely to will to surrender.

I'm not saying situation in Pokrovsk is good, but the first time I heard it will fall n 3 days was in August 2024, 483 days ago

It looks like we need peace negotations leading to ceasefire between Witkoff, Rubio and Vance.

Some people wonder "what happens if Zelensky steps down?". He is replaced by the next in succession - that is Stefanchuk. Do you think he would be willing to surrender?
The war will end when Crimea is returned to Ukraine, said the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk during a joint press conference with the Speaker of the Riksdag of the Kingdom of Sweden Andreas Norlén.

This is Yakutsk, capital of Sakha region, the "50 yr anniversary of Soviet Army Avenue", connecting the city center with Yakutsk International Airport. That's why Ukraine would rather be bombed by Russia than surrender, because becoming part of Russia is simply worse.
Yakutsk. The capital of the Sakha Republic. Russia’s diamond capital.

And you wouldn’t guess it, right?

I especially love those people in the West who sincerely believe CIA had to inspire the anti-Russian revolutions in our region. Like, without global conspiracy, on our own, we wouldn't want to have paved roads, drinkable tap water or cars better than Lada. But then Soros came and we became so picky.

Russia is trying to capture Pokrovsk (prewar pop. 50k) for 15 months and Kupiansk (20k) for 3 yrs. We keep hearing they will fall "any day now", but even if they do - how long Russia will fight for Kramatorsk (150k) and Sloviansk (100k)? Russia can't take the rest of Donbas by force before 2030.

If someone's career can be destroyed by releasing the Epstein Files it means it should be. If it was a politician a voted for, a journalist I like to read or my favorite movie star, I would say the same. I can't understand people who see it differently, like "he's in the files but he's our guy".
November 15, 2025 at 10:12 AM
Of course it's bad that some officials in Ukraine are corrupt, but it's still good that it is being persecuted. Some countries have it worse. In some countries the president can literally build a gilded ballroom from oligarch's bribes and get away with it.
November 13, 2025 at 7:01 PM
First time we heard Pokrovsk is about to fall was 15 months ago. Since then, we keep hearing the same. "The battle has entered the final phase, the fall is imminent". If it happens tomorrow (unlikely), it stopped Russian advance for more than a year. That is already "strategically significant".
November 13, 2025 at 9:39 AM
Russian milbloger Kharchenko wrote interesting description of Pokrovsk. Both sides have considerable groupings outside of the city, but they can't approach due to drones. Inside, there is a handful of soldiers from both sides, who barely ever engage each other. He called it "battle of shadows".
