Del Toro's Frankenstein is a visually stunning loveletter to classic gothic horror with a surprisingly tender heart but a few adaptation choices just hold it back from being the definitive version of Shelley's novel. Got loads of ideas for approaches and readings of it though.

Off to get my gallbladder removed so see you all on the other side I guess. Given the state of the world not having an organ to store my bile seems pretty appropriate...

This'll be my first academic event in a long while so be gentle with me ;p Looking forward to supporting some incredible research by young scholars with vital perspectives on the field. I'll be the old bald one nodding furiously and trying to spread good vibes :)

Didn't get a job I interviewed for - doing something I already do - and definitely feeling in a rut. Need to do something to break out of a negative routine. Feeling over the hill and too old to retrain but without prospects where I am.

Post pets pls I guess?

When people say 'unis should shrink' they really mean 'other people's children shouldn't go', 'people not like my friends and family shouldn't go', 'I don't care about the regional economies of England, Wales and Scotland' and 'I want to cover the tracks of my allies and their vandalism'.

If you've followed us for a while, you'll know we come up against automated content moderation pretty frequently. Things like paintings which depict a model with pubic hair being flagged as sexually explicit. Or links to our online shop flagged as sexual solicitation.

Today in the UK, the Online Safety Act (2023) came into force. This means that social media companies are required to undertake age verification for users in the UK to see "adult content". And who decides what is and is not "adult content"? The social media companies themselves.
