In two days, conservatives went from lambasting their own AG for punishing hate speech to cheering government coercion of ABC into punishing Jimmy Kimmel for hate speech.

How?? I study social identity, and this is a classic example of how it works.

Don't miss how widely this is being condemned. Conservatives of all stripes, including plenty of MAGA loyalists, are raking Bondi over the coals for such a bafflingly wrong and dangerously anti-free speech remark. Meanwhile, Trump is doubling down. Will be interesting to see who blinks first.
Attorney General Pam Bondi: "There's free speech and then there's hate speech, and there is no place, especially now, especially after what happened to Charlie, in our society...We will absolutely target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech."

In 2021, I had hoped to hold a journalism panel in New Orleans about Hurricane Katrina. COVID had other plans and we wound up doing it virtually. I'm glad we did, because now I can share it with you.

The 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is this week. This is my personal story written a decade ago. I'd love to hear yours.

Katrina 10: Our world changed and brought us closer together (among other stories)
Ten years ago, we came together. ~ I am a weather nerd. As a kid, I pretended I was covering severe weather from my bedroom (and sometimes the front yard in the middle of a monsoon). I learned abou…

I've added a tiny FAQ to my post yesterday about Bluesky and Mississippi's age verification law. Start here 👇
Did Mississippi ban Bluesky?

No. The government isn't blocking Bluesky from operating in Mississippi. Bsky is choosing to suspend service rather than comply with the law.

Pornhub did the same in numerous states after age verification laws that specifically targeted adult content.

I'm a Mississippi-born media law professor and have been providing analysis on age verification laws for a few years. Reach out if you're a journalist working on a story.

Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

Attn #aejmc25 -- the Pistahan Parade and Festival is happening right outside our doors!

My #aejmc25 is backloaded, so I did the sightseeing today!

Highly recommend Golden Gate Park (though a music festival will make getting there tougher this weekend).

Alternative: If you prefer your art museums quality over quantity, Legion of Honor is fantastic.

My niche Hulk Hogan memoriam: As a media law professor, few cases engaged my students like Bollea v. Gawker. It was controversial. Bizarre. An important test of our legal protections and professional ethics.

It also produced my favorite #McLemoreMemeWar entry of all time.

Read the article, sure. But listen and you can hear me shout legal analysis over airport announcements right before my flight boarded. It's great radio. www.mpbonline.org/blogs/news/m...

CBS is ending the entire Late Show concept, not just Colbert's stint. Add the recent cancelation of Taylor Tomlinson's show and CBS is completely out of late night. That's a monumental move in TV history. CBS didn't make it overnight because Colbert jabbed at his bosses in the opening monologue.

Imagine spending months working on this only for it to be totally ignored because it published on Coldplay cheaters day.

I must've stopped at a dozen gas stations, grocery stores and pharmacies looking for a newspaper to commemorate the Thunder championship. Not a single one had a paper rack. I get why they've disappeared. But it's still sad. A lost community ritual.

"Now we hate factual reporting as much as the other guys do" isn't the flex you think it is
I think a lot of journalists and politicians thought that coming to Bluesky would get them praised and worshipped like it was 2017 Twitter and the fact that didn’t instantly happen has absolutely broken their brains

The Tucker Carlson-Ted Cruz interview is actually a defense of partisan news. Friendly outlets are the only ones that get a shot at that interview. And the only ones whose tough questions are genuinely wrestled with, instead of the interviewee throwing "fake news" smoke bombs.

Heads up, #ica25, the evening protests are getting heated. Witnessed confrontations between protesters and police near the capitol grounds. Be vigilant if you're staying out tonight.

ABC didn't need to be pressured by the White House to suspend Terry Moran, nor give him a free pass because they did. His position is held to a higher standard. If you care about journalistic credibility, that's a good thing.
The timeline of Terry Moran's suspension deserves some unpacking.

This morning Trump White House aides publicly pushed ABC to discipline Moran. Lots of people have well-reasoned objections to that. But let's also note: ABC didn't "need" to be pressured >>>
