Texas A&M v. Missouri, LSU v. Alabama, and game of the week
BYU v. Texas Tech won't be on YouTube TV. But all three will be on the ABC broadcast network, which means most of the country would have always been able to watch for free without cable or streaming of any kind.

Bondi attacked a principle. The next day, Trump attached an enemy: ABC. The next day, Carr singled out a promiment person in the out-group: Kimmel.

When the principle is salient, it prevails. When the emphasis is on punishing an enemy, the principle takes a back seat to winning.

You'll learn things you never knew about Katrina from the people who covered it. And I hope you'll come away with an appreciation for what you mean to the local journalists who cover your community.

Or why my assignments default to not allow online submissions?!

Why aren't all social media platforms cutting Mississippi's access?

1. Because big platforms have systems and staffing to handle this.

2. They (and I) interpret the law as only applying to NEW accounts, not existing ones. That's far easier to manage or block without cutting off everyone.

Does Mississippi's age verification law apply to other social media?

Absolutely. Pretty much all of them except LinkedIn (Microsoft has the best lobbyists).

Did Mississippi ban Bluesky?

No. The government isn't blocking Bluesky from operating in Mississippi. Bsky is choosing to suspend service rather than comply with the law.

Pornhub did the same in numerous states after age verification laws that specifically targeted adult content.

Ah, @leolaporte.me "THEEE tech guy." (I was a producer at a radio station that carried his show.)

Right, most of these laws don't consider protecting our data. And there are real risks whether the ID verification is being done by the government, social media platform, or a third party.

The bill to watch is S-209. Its focus is pornography. U.S. state legislatures passed similar laws, often with bipartisan support, and they've been upheld by the Supreme Court.

I'm not familiar with the specifics, but I generally think age verification laws make the internet less private and more open to government regulation. It's about as contrary to the ethos of the internet as you can get.

They don't. Bluesky is choosing not to operate in Mississippi rather than comply with the law. Similar to what Pornhub has done in states that have age verification laws for adult websites.

On this particular issue, we've got a range of results:

Florida's absolutely mad content moderation law -- unanimously shot down.

Texas' age verification but only for adult websites -- ok'd 6-3 along ideological lines.

Man, this sucks. Let me know if I can help.

Wow, thanks for sharing! FWIW, my read is that Mississippi's broad age verification law isn't long for this world. Here's what Justice Kavanaugh wrote as the Supreme Court denied to hear the case this term.
August 23, 2025 at 12:42 AM
Justice Kavanaugh hinted strongly that he would. My guess is at least one other conservative would join him, and that would be enough. But it will take a new petition and that will take some time.

Fun to watch Google search trends for VPNs in states where laws like this go into effect.

The internet will always find a way.
