I updated a post on my blog that I use to track what I usually install on a review Mac. It includes links to utilities you may want to know about, if you do not already. It does NOT include many of the apps on my personal Mac (some of which are just there while being reviewed).
How I set up a new Mac [Updated x2]
Because I regularly review Apple’s Mac laptops and desktops, I’ve developed a setup routine for to make them my own for the brief period I have them.

I’m not big on New Year's resolutions, but I've got one for 2026: Update my smart home gear so most of its components use the Matter protocol. Although it had a rocky start, Matter has matured enough to finally make your smart home, well, smarter.

My 2026 tech resolution: Time to update that aging smart home network
After more than a decade of accumulating smart plugs, speakers and sensors, I realized parts of my setup were quietly becoming obsolete.

I had not been paying much attention to the skyrocketing cost of RAM, but when I finally dived into the topic I was astounded. The increase, driven largely by the AI boom, will eventually affect almost all consumer electronic gear - from PCs to phones to cars.
Why RAM prices are soaring — and what it means for your next computer
The cost of memory chips is surging as artificial intelligence devours global supply, pushing prices higher for everything from laptops to smartphones.

While we watch the Texans, we also wanted to check in and let you know that the forecast has not really changed tonight. Clearing skies should allow for a light freeze in much of the northern half of the area with cold 30s elsewhere. Matt has a quick forecast refresh this afternoon.

This sounds like a very useful feature, but Amazon isn't saying why it has the rights to do it. A case of don't ask permission first, ask forgiveness later.

More like Matter is finally coming into its own: More reliable in working across different devices and more devices are finally supporting it. Apple is a member of the Matter working group, and the standard is approaching ubiquity. Almost all my smart home devices are now Matter-capable.
How Matter has finally given Apple a path out of the HomeKit mess
With Matter and Thread, the smart home is experiencing a new start, and an upswing. We take a look back at Apple's history in the smart home and where things stand now.

It’s safe to say that no version of the operating system that powers Apple’s iPhones has been as divisive as iOS 26. The software brings new meaning to the phrase “love-hate relationship.” I’ve come down on the “love” side but if you can't stand it, here’s how to dial it way back.
