Of all my posts, this is the one that I wish would be shared widely. I hope people will donate to Bryan's legal defense, but even if you don't, it's important to be aware of the human rights horrors that are going on around us on a daily basis.
Please help Bryan, a decent and hardworking person who was just kidnapped off the street in DC. He has been in this country since he was a child. He has a business and a family. He does not deserve such shameful cruelty. Please share.

Counterpoint: my computer is alive and in love with me.
No one can tell me a single good use for it, for me. I have asked. Not a one.
What am I supposed to use it for? To summarize my emails? Too long, wrong. To write things? Too long, wrong. To plan trips? Planning is FUN and why would I outsource that? I played with it a bit six months ago, it was meh.

Also, I hate its enshittification of search results with my whole soul.

I am requesting clear answers regarding MPD’s cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and the disturbing incidents near schools. How is accountability being ensured when MPD appears to be acting outside current directives and practices?

Fantastic report on the xAI data center in Memphis from @moreperfectunion.bsky.social

The reference to the rise of a technocracy “with a plantation economy for the rest of the world” resonates. Data centers are an environmental justice issue.

What are the best local and/or independent publications covering data center issues?

Extra points if outside of Northern Virginia—though I also would love to hear who has done the best work covering this issue in the heart of “Data Center Alley”!

NEW: ICE agents violently arrested a man in a busy Hyattsville, MD intersection this week, at one point brandishing guns and pointing them at bystanders.

I spoke to multiple witnesses—including a local priest whose church is a sanctuary for undocumented people: www.thehandbasket.co/p/ice-agents...

Sadly our local NPR station fired most of not all of its local newsroom so I had to cancel my monthly donation (you don’t get a free pass from me just because you’re not corporate media).

I became a member of @51st.news instead, and so should you! (Founded by ex-WAMU/DCist employees)
When y’all cancel your Disney+ subs, please consider giving some of that money to your local NPR or PBS station, or other independent media like @boltsmag.org or @propublica.org

Post 9/11 thread for people to post the wildest shit they remember from 01 to 06

I'll start:

People thought Osama had an entire mountain hollowed out that he was using as his base and that's why AQ was hard to find and that somehow a group of like 30 dudes arranged this.

This is one that feels buried—or superseded by other heinous acts. I remember this being terrifying when it happened, as well as when I learned what an AK47 was. Bizarre that newspapers gave the sniper so much space by printing his photo and “last words”

MFP clearly holds a grudge against Mississippi Today, but allowing Haley Barbour to rewrite history is beyond the pale. I’ve canceled my MT membership.

Free advice to editors everywhere: you’re not required to publish every wordsmithed opinion essay “written” by a politician that crosses your desk!
Read my new take-no-prisoners column: note that it’s as much about journalism pandering before power as it is about Haley Barbour and that half a billion in federal Katrina for low-income house that he decided to use for pet port projects:

“Jimenez Rosa, a legal permanent resident and mother of four U.S. citizens, was detained over what her lawyer believes was a decades-old, personal-use marijuana charge, which is no longer a crime in Massachusetts today… “I was just like, ‘Girls, we might never see your mother again in this country’”
ICE released this Mass. mom with no phone, 30 miles from home in the rain after detainment for a sealed marijuana conviction
Federal authorities refused to tell the Canton woman's husband or lawyer on what grounds she was being detained until shortly before her release.

It’s nice to know that in the new fragmented digital media landscape some editors will still make room for the “truly unhinged community voices” op-eds that local papers used to run regularly

A useful WaPo map of where Trump Storm Troops are actually operating in DC.

If you know DC, what this map tell you is: They're making the gaudy show of strength in areas where it matters least and will do least good. Except for sheer spectacle.

The best part about the AHA Guidelines for AI pile-on is that if you scroll through the quote skeets, a hapless AHA employee teases that a *second* report (addressing research and scholarship) is due to drop!
