I don’t think of these 4 as doorstop histories (some are pretty succinct!) or part of the Father’s Day marketing plan at all. And she does express admiration for Gordon-Reid and Faust (her Harvard colleagues elsewhere). Shame she holds these strange views, I’ve always admired her writing.

Last time I was in Gettysburg I noticed one of the gift shops in town had a confederate flag in a 2nd story window. I wondered: Didn’t their parents teach them any better? (or their teachers for that matter.) maybe they think it helps draw a certain tourist clientele…

In the 80s, the beverage industry claimed redeeming bottles and recycling would spread AIDS! Fear seems to be the main tactic this time as well.

My personal experience is that when the LLM tools first came out they felt a bit like magic, and now they feel like a magic trick
It's the same thing Elon Musk does. Remember the Boring Company? Or colonizing Mars when he can't get a rocket to make it 500 feet up without exploding? The GenAI hype is the same. Already, the bubble is bursting as more people realize these tools are, at best, mid. (See the study linked by the OP)
