Coffee thoughts:

Ireland is a polity where you can go and visit a Minister in a constituency office on a weekend to ask for help filling in a form.

The distance to/from officeholders is effectively zero.

But the distance for most people from *power* can be (invisible to them) huge.

"The Empire is drawing borders inside our heads now. Real men and women must behave in a particular way, because we have said that if either gender is not behaving in that way it becomes like the colonised- the lesser races.

Most importantly, men (because they rule) must not be womanly"
New Gist: Trans rights are Data rights

An unusually long Gist on the data protection implications of the UK Supreme Court's decision to define what is the meaning of the word 'woman' in a single UK Act.

The Gist: Trans rights are Data rights
A UK court has made a decision defining genders which has put it at odds with a less noticed, more important, decision from the CJEU. This is the Gist.

The urge to do something insanely silly while invigilating exams gets stronger with each passing day. I’m thinking of Homer Simpson spinning on the ground saying ‘woop woop woop woop woop woop’

Always a great joy to see a dictator fall. Syrians have suffered enough. The task now is to ensure they do not suffer more, as the Iraqis and the Libyans did after the fall of their dictators. To that end, foreign powers, Western and non-Western, must also be kept at bay.

Invigilating exams at Trinity and I feel incredibly stupid. All those bright students working their brains so hard and all I can think of is how funny it would be if it was Gladiator 2: Rise of the Gladiators

A ★★★★ review of Gladiator II (2024)
Everyone told me it’s bad and I won’t like it. And perhaps it’s the contrarian in me but I thoroughly enjoyed this. The wee emperors (one more wee than the other) were cartoonish, admittedly. But then...

I wouldn’t describe this discourse as necessarily far right, just vapid and annoying. It was fun while it lasted on here!

Only way it would make any sense is if they negotiated to have Rory Hearne as Housing Minister but we know his policies are anathema to FF/FG and they’ll have zero leverage in negotiating a programme for government as they can easily be swapped out for a couple of independents!
The Soc Dems are a splinter party from Labour due to Labour implementing austerity as a junior partner with FG. The idea of them going into coalition when FF/FG have an almost complete majority is insane to me! #GE24
