"A lucid, thoughtful, at times troubling review of a new era in biology." Looks incredibly interesting - as you know, I can't wait to read it!
The first review of my forthcoming book ‘On the Future of Species’. Kirkus review books ahead of publication for the publishing industry, newspapers, and magazines. I think it is moderately encouraging that it won’t be used as kindling for log fires.

Every single ep of @lisarosenbaum.bsky.social's @nejm.org NOS pcast is just so good; just listened to the latest, about DPC & concierge models of primary care podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a... As always, like a good MD visit, she provides time, space, and empathy for story to express itself. Kudos.

Accurate. If you're an engineer and your deliverable is several "refinements" each update, than you deliver that independent of whether they're remotely useful (which, as you point out, and as the latest iphone iOS demonstrates painfully, they often aren't).
Why is it that every time I install an update on my laptop or phone everything gets harder to do? Things that used to take one keystroke now take two or three, and I see nothing that actually helps. Just a bunch of tech-nerds playing with their gear to make my life more confusing. Which isn't nice.

Reminds me of Mayhew’s wonderful ethnography London Labour and the London Poor (1851), where he noted that Victorian chimney sweeps had developed their own micro-culture and language. ‘A tidy’ was a good day’s earning, whereas a ‘shy’ was a bad one. ‘Going black’ represented a full day of sweeping.

I so want to believe this is right, although, having written just these sorts of op-eds for NYT WSJ WaPo FT Boston Globe etc - it's become difficult to feel as optimistic as I'd like, especially since I'm skeptical that these are read and thoughtfully absorbed by those who we imagine might benefit.
Why should scientists write op-eds? It's tempting to say the facts ought to speak for themselves. But the facts are largely whispering among themselves in the scientific literature. They need us to give them a voice. How? Advice in my latest @natchem.nature.com Thesis rdcu.be/eJlGL #chemsky 1/3
